Over the weekend, all six of LebCo’s Track & Field programs were in action at their respective League Championships. This weekend is the first of three weekends that is considered championship season for the sport. While these performances are not a prerequisite for qualification for next weekend’s District 3 Championship Meet, they do offer a glimpse at how athletes may be readying themselves for the next level of competitive action.
Later today, the District 3 qualifiers will be announced and not only are many LebCo athletes expected to make the cut, if this weekend’s performances are any indication as to how prepared they are, you can expect many to win medals and in the process to qualify for the PIAA State Championship Meet.
Lancaster Lebanon League
The Lancaster Lebanon League held their annual Track & Field Championship Meet over the course of Friday and Saturday. Twenty-four schools making the trip to Landisville to compete, with LebCo’s five member schools making up part of that contingent. The buses returned from Hempfield with our local athletes having earned medals in forty-nine events, with five of those being gold and six being silver.
In the Girls action, there were three gold medal winning performances by LebCo athletes. Lebanon junior Zariyah Whigham won the Triple Jump with a top jump of 36’11.5”, earning the team’s 1st gold since Erin Winters won back-to-back Pole Vault titles in 2014 & 2015. This year’s Pole Vault gold medalist was also a LebCo athlete, with ELCO’s Carissa Bender clearing 12’ to clinch the win. Cedar Crest freshman Eliana Schneider won the Javelin with a throw of 138’2”. As an individual, Schneider collected additional medals in the 800m and High Jump, while also adding another piece of hardware as part of the 4x400m relay. In the closest race of the meet, ELCO’s Jacey Hentz won silver in the 100m High Hurdles with a 15.59, finishing just .01 seconds behind Conestoga Valley’s Brooke Denlinger. Hentz also earned medals for her performances in the Pole Vault and Long Jump. When it comes to ELCO, Samantha Nelson finished 2nd in the Discus to lead the event that was largely dominated by LebCo athletes, as they combined to claim four medals and six of the top ten spots in the event. The ELCO Girls racked up the most points among LebCo’s representatives.
The LebCo Boys had two gold medal winning performances and several other top-end finishes. ELCO’s Colin Daub added “League Champion” to his lengthy resume of accomplishments, throwing the Discus an impressive 155’9”. Daub also finished 5th in the Shot Put. Joining Daub as a gold medalist was Annville-Cleona’s Noah Gunderson who repeated as the High Jump champion when he cleared 6’6” on Friday evening. Cedar Crest earned silver medals in each of the three relay events, a testament to their depth, especially as they were unable to run Gabe Lewis following Monday’s injury. Seniors Nick Garman and Kyle Rauchut, along with juniors Reed Fretz and Leo Tirado helped to lead the way for the Falcons who scored the most points among LebCo teams. This point total was also aided by sophomore Dylan Groff who announced his arrival, medaling in three individual events: Javelin, Long Jump, Triple Jump.

May 12th LebCo Track & Field Weekly Recap
Mid Penn Conference
On Saturday, athletes from Palmyra traveled to Chambersburg to take part in the Mid Penn Track & Field Championships. The meet was comprised of thirty-two teams, so it would have been easy for any of those schools to have gotten lost in the madness. However, Palmyra’s talented athletes made sure that did not happen, with the Boys finishing 5th and the Girls finishing 10th in the team scoring.
The Cougars collected a total of sixteen medals on the day. The Girls team collected six, while the Boys brought back ten to the 17078. Three of those medals were goal. Lydia Stoner won the Girls High Jump competition, clearing 5’1” in challenging conditions. Tyler Burgess, a sophomore, wowed the crowd by winning both hurdling events with career-best performances. In both hurdling events, Burgess was joined on the podium by teammate Jonathan McDannell. Mason Bucks earned two medals, clearing a career-best 5’11” in the High Jump before earning a silver medal in the Pole Vault. His height of 14’6” tied the winner’s performance. Also worth applauding was the performance of the Lady Cougar Javelin trio of Olivia Appleby, Sofie Price, and Xerena Topos who each medaled. Appleby led this squad by finishing 2nd with a throw of 115’7”.
