A cold front that brought steady rain to the region over Memorial Day Weekend moved over Shippensburg University’s Seth Grove Stadium on Saturday, creating difficult conditions for the second and final day of the 50th edition of the PIAA State Track & Field Championships.
Lebanon County athletes had already made their presence known on Friday, collecting four medals on Day 1 while setting up several more opportunities for Saturday. By the time the meet came to a close, the county had added six more medals, bringing the weekend total to ten.
Day 2 was highlighted by two Cedar Crest gold medals in less than 10 minutes, as Kaddel Howard won her fourth straight Outdoor State Championship in the Girls AAA 400m and Eliana Schneider broke a 22-year-old State Record on her way to the Girls AAA Javelin title. Around those two historic performances, Lebanon County athletes continued to battle through the rain and produce podium finishes across the track and field.
Girls Recap
Kaddel Howard arrived at Saturday’s Girls AAA 400m final with some uncertainty after an injury flare-up on Friday forced her to scratch from the 200m. Still, in the final 400m race of her high school career, Howard showed once again why she has owned the event in Pennsylvania.
Even while being cautious with Nationals coming up in three weeks, Howard pulled away from the field and won in 54.56. The next closest runner finished in 56.02, giving Howard plenty of separation as she secured her fourth straight Outdoor State Championship in the 400m.
The victory added one more defining moment to the career of Pennsylvania’s Queen of the Quarter Mile. Along with her four outdoor titles, Howard also won four straight indoor State Championships in the 400m during her time at Cedar Crest, closing out a high school career that stands among the very best in Lebanon County history.
In that same unforgettable 10-minute stretch for Cedar Crest, Eliana Schneider delivered another golden moment. Competing as the #2 seed in the Girls AAA Javelin, Schneider rose to the top of the field and saved her biggest throw for the biggest stage.
After finishing 4th in the event last year, Schneider launched a throw of 160’11” on her fifth attempt Saturday afternoon. The mark broke the previous PIAA State Record of 158’, which had stood since 2004, and gave the University of Virginia commit a perfect ending to her high school throwing career.
In addition to her Javelin gold, Schneider cleared 5’2” to finish 13th in the Girls AAA High Jump. Moments after breaking the State Record in the Javelin, she also stepped onto the track for the 800m, finishing 26th in 2:23.41.
Schneider, nicknamed “The Cheat Code,” will be remembered as one of the most versatile and accomplished Track & Field athletes Lebanon County has ever produced. Her record-setting performance also made her the second Lebanon County athlete in the past two seasons to set a State Record, joining Palmyra’s Tyler Burgess, who broke the 110m High Hurdles record last spring before heading to Texas Tech. Keep in mind, Howard also ran the fastest 400m time in Pennsylvania history last week at the District 3 Championship, though that mark is not recognized as the official PIAA State Record because it was not run at the State Championship meet.
Annville-Cleona senior MacKenzie Stellmach closed her illustrious high school career with two Day 2 races, finishing 15th in the Girls AA 3200m in 11:36.75 after helping the Dutchmen’s 4x800m Relay team place 23rd in 10:36.82. That relay also included Leah Tshudy, Paige Stoltz, and Lucy Stellmach.
On a local note, McCaskey captured the Girls AAA team championship, led by Vivian Salerno winning the 800m, Ella Petrosky taking silver in the 100m and 4th in the 200m, and the Red Tornado’s 4x100m Relay racing to gold.
Boys Recap
Travis Furmanski led the boys medal push with a career-best performance in the Boys AAA 3200m. After finishing 7th in the event last year, the Cedar Crest senior returned to Shippensburg looking to climb higher on the podium. Racing through cold rain for all eight laps, Furmanski delivered one of the best races of his career, finishing 3rd in 8:55.74. The time was a 17-second improvement from his State meet performance last season, giving the Ole Miss commit bronze and further strengthening his place among the top distance runners in Lebanon County history.
Oliver Funck also made another trip to the podium, giving Annville-Cleona its second medal of the day and his second medal of the weekend. After placing 6th in Friday’s Boys AA 1600m in 4:16.70, Funck returned Saturday for the 3200m and again finished 6th, this time in 9:22.60. It was his best time of the season by more than six seconds, capping a championship-season surge that showed just how strong Funck was when the stakes were highest. The Dutchmen senior left Shippensburg with two 6th-place medals and two standout performances in difficult conditions.
Annville-Cleona sophomore Dominic Wentling added his second medal of the weekend in the Boys AA Shot Put. After placing 8th in Friday’s Discus, Wentling returned to the throwing circle Saturday and finished 4th with a top mark of 52’11.5”. Already a two-time State medalist with two high school seasons still ahead of him, Wentling has quickly built one of the most impressive young throwing résumés in the area. His Saturday performance came in a strong field and gave the Dutchmen another podium finish to close the meet.
Cedar Crest’s Boys AAA 4x100m Relay team of Isaiah Zimmerman, Nolan Lingle, Cameron Tirado, and Landen Weaber also earned a State medal, finishing 6th in 42.65. The Lancaster-Lebanon League Champions qualified for the final Friday and came back Saturday to show the same speed and consistency that carried them throughout the spring.
Annville-Cleona senior David Moran, the defending Boys AA 800m State Champion, faced a loaded field in his title defense. Moran opened in 56.38 and finished 10th in 1:57.03, closing out his State meet after entering the race with the attention that comes with being the reigning champion.
Cedar Crest’s Boys AAA 4x800m Relay team of Hayden Snavely, Bryce Wampler, Wyatt Wolfe, and Zachary Margut ran 8:04.14 to finish 3rd in the second of three heats before placing 14th overall once all results were compiled. The event was ultimately won by Mifflin County in 7:42.46, with Carter Smith delivering a sizzling 1:47.85 anchor split to move the Huskies up six places and secure the State title.
Weekend Wrap-Up
Across two cold, demanding days at Shippensburg, Lebanon County athletes left the PIAA State Track & Field Championships with 10 total medals, two State Championships, and one State Record.
Friday’s medalists were Cedar Crest’s Makenzie Wamsher in the Girls AAA 1600m, Annville-Cleona’s Oliver Funck in the Boys AA 1600m, Palmyra’s Jaxton Barger in the Boys AAA Pole Vault, and Annville-Cleona’s Dominic Wentlingin the Boys AA Discus.
