Northern Lebanon’s Record-Setting Spring Ends with Narrow State Playoff Defeat
With sunny skies and temperatures hovering around 80 degrees, the setting was ideal for a strong baseball game on Monday, June 1st, as Northern Lebanon hosted Archbishop Wood in the 1st round of the PIAA State Playoffs. Northern Lebanon entered the day with momentum after winning the District 3 Championship against East Pennsboro, but with both teams facing elimination, the matchup turned into a tight pitchers’ duel. In the end, Archbishop Wood was just a little stronger at the plate, edging Northern Lebanon 2-1.
Archbishop Wood threatened right away in the top of the 1st, putting two runners on after an error and a single. A wild pitch moved both runners into scoring position before Caden Vacca hit into a fielder’s choice that brought home the game’s first run. Adrian Gonzalez limited the damage from there, working out of the inning with Northern Lebanon trailing 1-0.
Northern Lebanon answered immediately in the bottom half of the 1st. Andrew Via led off with a single, then moved into scoring position on a groundout by Landon Copenhaver. Via stole third, and Owen Fahringer put the ball in play to bring him home, with an errant throw allowing Fahringer to reach safely as the game evened at 1-1.
From there, the game settled into a tense back-and-forth between two strong pitching performances. Gonzalez worked a quick 2nd, then continued to keep Archbishop Wood from adding on despite traffic on the bases. Northern Lebanon had a chance in the 3rd when Ryan Clemmer drew a walk, but the Vikings were unable to push across the go-ahead run.
Archbishop Wood kept applying pressure, collecting two singles in the 4th and a double in the 5th, but Gonzalezcontinued to battle through key spots. Northern Lebanon’s defense helped keep the game tied, including a play at the plate in the 4th that cut down a runner trying to score. The Vikings also turned 3 double plays in the game, helping Gonzalez escape multiple jams and keeping the season alive into the late innings.
The decisive run came in the top of the 6th. Archbishop Wood opened the inning with a double and a single, then loaded the bases with a walk. A sacrifice fly brought in the go-ahead run, but Gonzalez was able to escape further trouble with another double play that kept the deficit at 2-1.
Northern Lebanon had one final chance in the bottom of the 7th after Connor Stoltz led off with a single. Christian Anspach moved him into scoring position with a groundout, but Archbishop Wood pitcher Brady Sell finished off the complete-game effort. Sell allowed just 2 hits and 1 unearned run over 7 innings, striking out 11 and walking 1.
For Northern Lebanon, Gonzalez took the loss despite another strong effort on the mound. He went 6 innings, allowing 2 runs, 1 earned, on 8 hits while striking out 3 and walking 3. Aidan Long came on in relief in the 7th and closed out the inning without allowing a run.
Archbishop Wood was led offensively by Averell Wulls, AJ Hopkins, and Vacca, who each collected 2 hits. Dom DiGuiseppe and Vacca each drove in 1 run for Archbishop Wood.
Archbishop Wood now moves on in the PIAA State Playoffs, while Northern Lebanon’s season comes to a close at 24-2 after a memorable run that included the program’s first District 3 Championship and one of the best seasons in school history.
The loss also closed the book on a tremendous spring for the Northern Lebanon baseball and softball programs. Earlier Monday, the Northern Lebanon softball team also saw its season come to an end with a 5-0 loss on the road against Valley View, the defending PIAA State Champion. The Lady Vikings finished the year 20-6 after reaching the District 3 Championship Game and earning another trip to the State Tournament.
While both seasons ended sooner than the Vikings had hoped, there is plenty for the Northern Lebanon community to celebrate. Between 2 State Tournament teams, a District 3 baseball title, a District 3 softball runner-up finish, and a combined 44 wins, it was a spring that will be remembered in Fredericksburg for a long time.
Best of luck to the seniors from both programs as they move on from careers that helped raise the standard for Northern Lebanon athletics.
