Northern Lebanon Battles Through Rain, Boiling Springs to Reach District 3 Championship

On a rainy Thursday evening, the Northern Lebanon baseball team hosted Boiling Springs with a trip to the District 3 Championship and a spot in the PIAA State Playoffs on the line. After battling through early trouble, a tied game, and a late push from the Bubblers, the Vikings held on for a 6-4 semifinal win.

Blake Burdick, only a sophomore, got the start on the mound for Northern Lebanon, and the rainy conditions made things difficult early. Boiling Springs opened the scoring in the 1st when Timmy George singled home two runs, giving the Bubblers a 2-0 lead before the Vikings were able to get out of the inning.

Northern Lebanon answered right away. Andrew Via opened the bottom of the 1st with a single, then moved up as the Vikings loaded the bases with walks by Landon Copenhaver and Owen Fahringer. Adrian Gonzalez worked a bases-loaded walk to bring in the first run, and Connor Stoltz followed with a sacrifice fly to tie the game at 2-2. Christian Anspach then singled to reload the bases, but Boiling Springs was able to escape without allowing Northern Lebanon to take the lead.

Boiling Springs moved back in front in the 2nd when Landon McMahon delivered an RBI single, making it 3-2. The Bubblers continued to put pressure on Burdick, but the sophomore worked through traffic, adding two strikeouts in the inning and keeping the Vikings within one.

Northern Lebanon broke through again in the 3rd. Gonzalez and Stoltz started the inning with singles before Anspachreached on a bunt to load the bases. Kaden Beamesderfer brought home the tying run with a sacrifice fly, and Ryan Clemmer followed with the swing that changed the game, ripping a run-scoring hit down the left field line to give the Vikings their first lead at 4-3.

From there, Northern Lebanon turned to Aidan Long, who came on in relief in the 5th and quickly settled the game down. Burdick, who earned the win, left after battling through four innings and improved his season record to 5-1, while lowering his ERA to 1.69, another strong step forward in what has become an impressive sophomore campaign.

With the Vikings still holding a one-run lead, Clemmer drew a walk in the 6th and Via followed with his second hit of the night. Copenhaver moved both runners over with a groundout, and Fahringer delivered a two-run single to give Northern Lebanon a 6-3 cushion heading into the final inning.

Boiling Springs did not go quietly. The Bubblers pushed across one run in the 7th and put pressure on Long, but the Vikings’ reliever finished the job, sending Northern Lebanon to the District 3 Championship while also clinching a spot in the PIAA State Playoffs. Northern Lebanon also helped itself defensively by turning a double play, while the Vikings’ offense showed patience throughout the night by drawing six walks.

At the plate, Fahringer drove the middle of the lineup and led Northern Lebanon with two RBI. Anspach and Via each collected two hits for the Vikings, while Clemmer, Gonzalez, and Stoltz each added key hits during the win.

Boiling Springs finished with nine hits and played a clean defensive game without committing an error. George led the Bubblers by going 3-4 with three RBI, while Torin Williamson added two hits and McMahon reached three times with a hit and two walks.

After the game, Fahringer summed up the moment with a simple message: “Jesus is amazing.”

Northern Lebanon is now 23-1 and will play the winner of #7 Big Spring and #3 East Pennsboro in the District 3 Championship on Monday at Penn Medicine Park, home of the Lancaster Stormers. First pitch is scheduled for 1:15 p.m.
