Down 6, Cougars Roar Back to Defeat McDevitt

With baseball back in the air this week, Palmyra were home on Thursday looking to add its 5th win of the season. The Cougars had to do it the hard way, erasing a six-run deficit before storming back for a 9-6 win over Bishop McDevitt.

Bishop McDevitt struck first in the top of the 1st when Jett Daugherty delivered an RBI single. The Crusaders added another run in the 2nd on a sacrifice fly by Jack Wierzbicki, then stretched the lead in the 3rd with help from an error, an RBI ground out by Josh Bernard, and a run-scoring single from Easton Comp.

Trailing 6-0, Palmyra answered in a big way in the bottom of the 3rd. Aidan Willard got the Cougars on the board with an RBI double, Adam Strohecker followed with a run-scoring single, and Jesse Willi added another RBI hit. Matthew Eldridge later drove in a run with a ground out, and an error helped Palmyra pull even closer as the Cougars turned the game around with a five-run frame.

After chipping away and settling the game down on the mound, Palmyra finally moved in front for good in the 6th. Ezra Good lined a single down the right field line to give the Cougars the lead, Gabe Kern followed with a sacrifice fly, and Willi added another RBI single down the left field line as Palmyra opened up a 9-6 advantage.

Palmyra finished with 9 hits in the win, with Good, Nolan Bown, Strohecker, and Willi each collecting 2. Willi drove in 3 runs to pace the offense, while Willard doubled, drove in a run, scored twice, and stole 2 bases. The Cougars were aggressive on the basepaths throughout, finishing with 4 stolen bases.

On the mound, Grady Stephens earned the win with 3 scoreless innings in relief. He allowed just 1 hit, struck out 3, and did not issue a walk while helping Palmyra hold the Crusaders scoreless over the final 4 innings. Max Woodley made the start, and Willard added a scoreless inning in relief to help close it out.

For Bishop McDevitt, Daugherty, Comp, Bernard, and Wierzbicki each drove in a run during the early surge. But after building that six-run cushion, the Crusaders were unable to hold off Palmyra’s rally.

Palmyra (5-0) will be on the road tomorrow once again when they take on Warwick in non-league action.
