The Nominees
Elijah Foltz (Palmyra / So.) – Wrestling: At the PIAA State Championships, Foltz battled to an 8th-place finish at 107 pounds. Competing in his first full season of varsity action, the sophomore rebounded from an opening-round loss to work his way onto the podium and became the first Cougar to earn a State medal since 1988. He finished the year with a 40-6 record.
Akaiya Hershey (New Covenant / Sr.) – Basketball: In Saturday’s come-from-behind win over Northumberland Christian, Hershey delivered an effort that went far beyond the stat sheet. The senior brought tremendous defensive intensity, creating deflections, forcing turnovers, and applying relentless pressure to the opposing point guard. Her spark helped ignite the Flames’ 4th-quarter rally from a 5-point deficit to a 6-point win, which marked the school’s first-ever State Playoff victory.
Klint Miller (ELCO / Jr.) – Wrestling: At the PIAA State Championships, Miller placed 7th at 160 pounds in AAA. His finish carried major significance for the Raiders, as he became the first ELCO male wrestler to earn a State medal since 2007 and the first non-senior from the program to do so. Miller closed the season with a 38-6 record.
Jackson Smith (Cedar Crest / So.) – Basketball: On Saturday, Cedar Crest traveled west to face WPIAL champion Upper St. Clair in the State Playoffs, and Smith helped the Falcons show they would not be easily pushed around. In the first half, the sophomore knocked down four three-pointers to fuel Cedar Crest and force a halftime tie. Smith finished his first State Playoff game with 13 points.
Sam Wolford (Northern Lebanon / Sr.) – Wrestling: At the PIAA State Championships, Wolford earned a 5th-place finish in AA at 121 pounds. His podium finish marked the third State medal of his career, and notably, he reached the podium in three different seasons at three different weight classes. Wolford finished his senior season with a 53-5 record and closed his career at 195-31.
Past Winner Update
Hayley Sheroky (Northern Lebanon / Sr.) – Basketball:
In Saturday’s loss to undefeated Central Columbia in the First Round of the State Playoffs, Sheroky overcame injury concerns to lead the Lady Vikings with 12 points. The effort came in what was the senior’s final high school game, capping a standout career in which she consistently helped power Northern Lebanon’s success.
Kylee Trostle (ELCO / Jr.) – Wrestling: Trostle battled her way to a 4th-place finish at the PIAA State Championships at 112 pounds, giving ELCO the highest State finish by a wrestler in school history. The junior’s performance earned her the second State medal of her career and added another major accomplishment to an already impressive résumé.
