Nick Weidman

During the week of January 19th, Nick Weidman delivered a moment that will live on in Palmyra wrestling lore. Competing at 145 pounds in a high-stakes dual against Northern York, Weidman came through in one of the most pivotal bouts of the night. With a team title on the line and the matchup expected to be tight, the junior rose to the occasion. In the second period, he secured a thunderous pin that brought the Palmyra bench and crowd to life. While the Cougars ultimately came up just short in the team score, Weidman’s victory stood as the defining highlight of the night. The win pushed him to 21–7 on the season and earned him recognition from our readers as the LebCo Athlete of the Week.
“We were facing Northern York for the team title, and my match was one of the two pivotal matches of the night,” Weidman said. “It was supposed to be close, and it was at first. But in the second period, I hit a Granby into a Peterson and pinned my opponent.”

That moment was emblematic of a season that has marked a major leap forward for Weidman. His personal goal is clear: “This season I want to qualify for the individual state tournament.” And he’s positioned himself well to do just that.
Beyond individual success, Weidman has been instrumental in Palmyra’s historic team run. “This year our team has had the best season in Palmyra history,” he said. “As of right now, I have the most pins of anyone on the team, and I’ve contributed to many of our big wins—including three of the four matches we won to qualify for the team state tournament.”
Indeed, Weidman has been a key piece of a Cougars squad that has surged to a 19-4 record. With his help, Palmyra advanced past the first round of the District 3 Wrestling Team Tournament for the first time in school history, finishing fourth overall and punching its ticket to the PIAA State Team Championship Tournament.

Head coach Jon Regets sees Weidman’s rise as the result of years of quiet dedication. “Nick Weidman is undoubtedly the most improved wrestler on our roster and highly deserving of this recognition,” Regets said. “He has quietly invested an immense amount of time and effort over the past three seasons, both inside and outside of the wrestling room.”
Regets also pointed to a trait that has defined Weidman’s journey. “His father and our assistant coach, Josh Weidman, recently noted that ‘consistency is his superpower,’ and I couldn’t agree more. For two years, Nick put in the work without seeing the results he desired. Never deterred, he kept grinding—focusing not only on the physical elements of the sport but also on his mental preparation. Those results are now following, and both he and his teammates are benefiting from his dedication.”
Away from the mat, Weidman runs cross country and prides himself on staying disciplined with his schoolwork. When he’s not training or studying, he enjoys reading, relaxing with friends, and watching TV. One fun fact that underscores just how much he’s grown: this season alone, he has more wins than his previous two seasons combined.
“I enjoy sports because they reward people who put in a lot of effort over a long period of time,” Weidman said. “Not everybody can be great at them.”
Congratulations to Nick Weidman on being named LebCo Athlete of the Week. Best of luck to him and the Palmyra Cougars as they continue their postseason run, beginning Tuesday against Obama Academy, the District 8 champion.
