Anthony Figueroa

During the week of October 27th, Cedar Crest senior Anthony “Tony” Figueroa capped off his high school cross country career with a strong showing on the state’s biggest stage. At the PIAA State Championship Meet, Figueroa placed 90th overall with a time of 17:15. His performance earned him recognition as the LebCoSports Athlete of the Week.
Figueroa’s finish also helped the Falcons — led by State Champion Travis Furmanski — to a 14th-place team result in the AAA standings. This marked another impressive chapter in what has been a memorable season for Cedar Crest cross country, which included winning the Lancaster Lebanon League Championship.

Reflecting on States, Figueroa said, “It was by far my best of the season. My legs felt like they could handle the hills just as I had trained them to all summer long (which was not how they felt for the majority of my season). I beat a lot of great competitors who I’ve been trying to beat all season long and it was a great end to my senior season.”
Figueroa set out this year with the simple goal of working hard and improving as much as possible. “My personal goals were to work my butt off and improve as much as humanly possible,” he said. That mindset proved contagious, helping drive a Cedar Crest team that qualified for States as a group.
“My goals aligned well with the team’s goals of qualifying for the state meet,” he added. “Me pushing myself allowed me to pull along teammates; thus creating an incredibly deep group of runners.”
He credits Coaches Risser, Bare, and Barret for their support throughout the season. “Coaches Risser and Bare provided excellent coaching and motivation, along with Coach Barret for keeping the vibes high,” said Figueroa. He also expressed gratitude to his parents for “supporting my athletic endeavors.”

A two-sport athlete, Figueroa will now transition to the track and field season, where he looks to continue his progress as a distance runner. Long-term, he plans to run in college and eventually compete in marathons.
Athleticism clearly runs in the family, as his sisters Cara and Annie both compete in field hockey and share his dedication to their sports.
When he’s not training, Figueroa admits that he’s often still thinking about running because of the time he spends training. “I ran 900 miles between Memorial Day and Labor Day,” he said proudly — an average of 63 miles per week.
Figueroa’s drive and discipline have defined his high school career, and he remains focused on discovering his “limitless potential.”
Congratulations to Tony on an excellent cross country career. While his racing on the trails may be done, he’ll now look to close out his senior year strong on the track — literally running out his time in high school.
