Cedar Crest 42, Lower Dauphin 36 

After notching a 30-point win over Elizabethtown for their fourth victory in a row, Cedar Crest was matched up against the home team in the Championship game of the Lower Dauphin Holiday Tournament in a battle of the Falcons. Crest jumped out to a 3 point advantage by the end of the 1st quarter behind 8 points from senior guard Allie Metzgar. In the 2nd quarter, the Cedar Crest defense limited Lower Dauphin’s opportunities. This resulted in a 21-14 advantage at the half. The 2nd half was played tight, with Lower Dauphin only able to get one point back as they tried to cut into the Crest lead. The Crest defense down the stretch continues to create turnovers and make it difficult for Lower Dauphin to make any major runs. In an encore to Thursday’s big performance, Kaila Francis scored 4 in the 4th.

In total, eight Cedar Crest players scored in the total team victory. It is worth noting that Cedar Crest’s outstanding performance in this fiercely physical game was truly impressive and showed that they could be around deep into the postseason.

In the game, Metzgar connected on three three-pointers and went 2-2 from the free throw line on her way to scoring 11 to lead Cedar Crest. Lizzy Lowe had a basket in each quarter on her way to scoring 9 points.

Cedar Crest (9-3) will return to action when they host Reading on Wednesday.

Thursday, December 28

Lebanon 42, Northern Lebanon 31

After both Lebanon and Northern Lebanon won their opening round games of the Lebanon Holiday Tournament, there was immediate excitement as these two teams were set to clash. For Lebanon, they have been clicking on all cylinders. Northern Lebanon has also been looking unstoppable, running their record to 8-0 to start the season.

The Vikings got out to a hot start and led by four after the 1st quarter. The big story throughout the game was the defensive mettle that Northern Lebanon showed in slowing the Cedars, who had scored 60 points through the first three quarters of Wednesday’s win over Palmyra (a really good defensive unit). In the 1st quarter, Olivia Shutter was able to score 9 points.

Shutter would hit another three pointer in the 2nd quarter, as the two teams continued to battle. While Kailah Correa scored 6 points in the 1st quarter, more of her teammates became involved before halftime to cut Northern Lebanon’s lead down to 3 points.

In the 3rd quarter, Lebanon slowed the pace down before going on an 8-2 run ahead of the final quarter. Much of the offense again went through Correa, who scored 9 in the period. Olive Brandt added a field goal and also went 2-2 from the charity stripe. Going into the 4th, Lebanon had taken a 35-32 lead over the Vikings. The Cedars then kept the game out of reach with tremendous free throw shooting once again. In the 4th, Brandt went 5-6, while Liliana Harrison converted on a three point play after being fouled in the act of shooting.

While Northern Lebanon lost, it proved a lot about who they are as a team. For Lebanon, it was another win that showed that they are developing into the form that won them the Section 1 title last season.

For the Cedars, Correa led the scoring with 19 points. Brandt provided 14 points, going 8-10 from the line. Shutter led Northern Lebanon with 14 points.

Lebanon (8-2) will travel to play Cedar Crest next Friday. Northern Lebanon (8-1) will host ELCO on Tuesday in another intriguing matchup.

Parkland 60, ELCO 35

ELCO won thrillingly over Pine Grove on Wednesday, earning their spot in the Pine Grove Holiday Tournament Championship Game. Their opponent was Parkland, Pennsylvania’s 4th largest high school. Despite the size difference, ELCO kept it within reach during the 1st half of play before Parkland used a solid 3rd quarter to put it away.

Makenna Seifert led the Raiders with 13 points. Kenzie Eckhart contributed 11 points.

ELCO (6-3) is back in action when they travel to play Northern Lebanon on Tuesday evening.

Cedar Crest 50, Elizabethtown 20

Cedar Crest traveled to play Elizabethtown to play at the Lower Dauphin Holiday Tournament. Entering Thursday, the Falcons were 7-3, yet despite their record they have shown that their offensive rhythm has yet to fully develop. This did not seem to be an issue in this game, as they cruised to their fourth straight victory.  Sophomore Kaila Francis got going early, scoring 9 in the 1st quarter as Crest ran their lead to 16 points prior to the end of the 1st quarter.  Overall, the offensive output slowed down the rest of the game, but Francis continued her best scoring performance of the year, adding 8 points in the 2nd quarter and 4 more in the 3rd. She also went 5-6 from the free throw line. Due to the nature of the game, Coach Shay was able to play all twelve of her girls.

On Friday, Cedar Crest (8-3) will play Lower Dauphin for the championship.

Schuylkill Valley 44, Annville-Cleona 39

In the finals of the Schuylkill Valley Holiday Tournament, Annville was matched up against the host school. The Panthers entered the game with a 6-4 record, having won four straight games. Ava Hoover scored 6 in the 1st quarter as the Dutchmen kept pace with the home team. Unfortunately, they lost a step in the 2nd quarter and were facing an 11 point deficit at halftime. In the 3rd, Kendall Cooper scored 8, as Annville stopped the bleeding. A frantic effort in the 4th quarter, led by Ainsley Sellers with 6 points, made the game much closer, but the gap was too much to overcome in the time that remained.

Cooper led the Dutchmen with 12 points, all of which came in the 2nd half. Hoover was also in double-digits, scoring 10.

Annville-Cleona (4-5) will play again on Tuesday when they travel to Octorara.

Palmyra 44, New Oxford 27

A night after struggling against the Cedars in the opening round of the Lebanon Holiday Tournament, the Lady Cougars displayed the strength of their defense in holding New Oxford to a single point in the 1st quarter. Mya Doster scored 6 points in the opening period to pace Palmyra. In the 2nd quarter, Palmyra kept things going on the offensive end of the floor, led by Keely Bowers, who hit three of the four three-pointers she’d make in the 1st half of the game. This was especially important, as she had an unusually quiet night on Wednesday, draped by Lebanon’s Jae Burrus most of the game. Leading at the half by 19 points, 28-9, the Lady Cougars cruised in the 2nd half to secure the victory.

With 12 points to lead the way, Bowers was one of four Palmyra players to reach double figures. Doster scored 11, and Emma Sibbach chipped in 11.

Palmyra (7-2) will host Cedar Cliff on Wednesday evening.

Wednesday, December 27

Annville-Cleona 46, Tulpehocken 18

Annville-Cleona entered play in the Schuylkill Valley Holiday Tournament with a 3-4 record. The Dutchmen, winners of two straight, hoped to make it back to .500 with a win over Tulpehocken, who were on a two game streak of their own. Annville left little doubt early on which team would be walking away with three wins in a row as they raced out to an 8 point lead by the end of the 1st quarter. They would continue to hold Tulpehocken in place and took a 24-7 advantage by halftime. In the 1st half, Ava Hoover led the Dutchmen with 8 points. In the 3rd, the Annville domination continued this time with Kendall Cooper going off for 12 points in the frame. Up 27 going into the 4th quarter, Coach Sanchez was able to rest his starters ahead of tomorrow’s tournament championship game.

For the game, Cooper led Annville with 14 points. Hoover finished with 12.

Annville-Cleona (4-4) will play on Thursday at 7 pm for the championship.

Northern Lebanon 40, New Oxford 31

Northern Lebanon put their perfect 7-0 record on the line against New Oxford in the opening round of the Lebanon Holiday Tournament. Following a 1st quarter when New Oxford could not find a way to score against the Vikings, Northern Lebanon would use a consistent scoring effort across all four quarters.

Kasey Weimer led Northern Lebanon with 14 points, 10 of which came in the 1st half. Olivia Shutter joined her in double-digits with 12 points.

Northern Lebanon (8-0) will play Lebanon in Thursday’s championship.

ELCO 54, Pine Grove 51 

On December 5th, ELCO traveled to Pottsville and pulled off an exciting win in the game’s final minute at Martz Hall. Tonight, they traveled back to Schuylkill County to play Pine Grove on their home court in the opening round of their Holiday Tournament. Coming off two straight losses, the Raiders would have to play against a very tough Cardinal team with a long history of success. Pine Grove built an early lead despite two three-pointers by Sara Miller. Pine Grove again outscored ELCO in the 2nd quarter to build an 8 point lead at the half. In the 3rd quarter, Kenzie Eckhart and Maddie Stout began to get things going for the Raiders on the offensive end to cut the deficit to 5 points. In the 4th, a hard-charging ELCO team exploded for 20 points to overtake Pine Grove. The Raiders took the lead with 6:50 left, but the game remained a back-and-forth contest the rest of the way. Pine Grove led with 39.4 seconds left, but excellent foul shooting down the stretch by Eckhart and Stout propelled ELCO to the win.

Eckhart finished with 22 points, 15 of which came in the 2nd half. She went 8-13 on free throws for the game but was 5-5 in the 4th quarter. Stout scored 9 points, all of them in the 2nd half. She went 4-4 from the free throw line in the 4th quarter. Pine Grove was led by Marissa Stewart, who scored 29 points, including seven three-pointers.

ELCO (6-2) will play in the tournament final against Parkland tomorrow at 6 pm.

Lebanon 63, Palmyra 27

Wednesday night featured two LebCo teams battling it out in the opening round of the Lebanon Holiday Tournament. Lebanon entered the game with a 6-2 record but has been rolling over the course of four straight wins. Palmyra came in with a 6-1 record, with the only blemish being a road loss to Cedar Crest in their most recent contest.

Simply put, this game showed why Lebanon is considered to be among Pennsylvania’s best teams. When they play this way, the Cedars make it tough for any team to play against them. They used a strangling defensive effort to limit the otherwise talented Lady Cougars while Kailah Correa got going early. By the end of the 1st quarter, the Cedars had built an 11 point advantage, with Correa scoring 10 points. The strong offensive effort from the Lebanon starters would continue to the next two quarters as they held a 35 point advantage going into the 4th. With the type of game it was, both teams were able to give varsity minutes to their bench ahead of Thursday’s games.

Correa finished the game with 20 points to lead all scorers. Palmyra was led in scoring by Addi Salus with 15 points.

Lebanon (7-2) will play in Thursday’s championship against undefeated Northern Lebanon. Palmyra (6-2) will look to bounce back quickly when they play New Oxford in the consolation round.
