Palmyra Falls to Mechanicsburg in Overtime Thriller, Turns Attention to District Playoffs
The foliage changing colors and the cooling temperatures are clear signs of autumn, and also nature’s indicator that the fall sports regular season is coming to a close. For many field hockey teams, that means the end is near, yet for the Palmyra Cougars, the proverbial “second season” is just beginning.
The Cougars came into this week with one final regular-season test before the start of the playoffs, a powerhouse opponent standing in the way of completing a perfect regular season.
The Cougars entered the night with a sterling 17-0 record, feeling momentum on the heels of their epic 1-0 victory over Lower Dauphin last week. Having virtually locked up the #1 seed in District 3 2A, Palmyra was attempting to do the unthinkable: navigate a difficult Mid-Penn schedule to an undefeated season.
All that stood between them and this historic milestone was a very strong Mechanicsburg team (13-3), currently third in the 3A district standings and ranked 21st in the nation. In the end, it was Mechanicsburg winning this hotly contested game in a 2-1 overtime thriller.
Mechanicsburg got on the board first at Soldiers and Sailors Field when Syracuse commit Mary Olivetti scored an unassisted goal with 9:04 remaining in the 2nd quarter. Remarkably, this marked the first time the Cougars had trailed all season.
Palmyra showed great poise thereafter, ending the first half with several scoring attempts, but ultimately still trailing going into halftime.
Palmyra knotted the score at 1-1 with 6:32 left in the 3rd quarter on a terrific goal by junior Addy Barger. Her score came on the second of two consecutive corners forced by junior Ella Detweiler, whose aggressive and physical play was the catalyst for several 2nd-half scoring opportunities.
After a scrum in front of the cage involving a multitude of Cougars, it was Barger’s stick-back that found the back of the cage and forced the eventual overtime.
Overtime rules dictate that both sides play 7-on-7, with the first score deciding the victory. Palmyra began the extra frame with a one-player advantage courtesy of a 2-minute card assessed to Olivetti at the end of regulation.
The Cougars were able to capitalize on the advantage and secure the first penalty corner of the overtime period, but their shot attempt was thwarted by some stout Wildcat defense.
Moments later, a run-out by Mechanicsburg resulted in a penalty corner of its own, and senior Liberty Olivetti received the insert at the top of the circle and ripped a wicked drive that found the back of the cage for the winning goal.
For the Cougars, they finish the regular season 17-1 and still hold the #1 seed heading into the District playoffs. There certainly is some disappointment in not completing the milestone undefeated season, but getting such a strong test and valuable overtime experience like they did against the Wildcats could pay dividends when it really matters in the upcoming playoffs.
Palmyra now has a week off to prepare for the start of Districts, when the Cougars will host Round 1 action next Tuesday with a likely rematch against Susquehannock, whom they defeated 9-0 in early September.
If they survive that opening-round contest, some strong opponents like Elizabethtown and Red Land wait in the wings, though certainly the stiffest challenge is expected to come from archrival Warwick, with whom the Cougars have had multiple memorable matchups in recent history.
In 2024, it was Warwick winning District and State gold, defeating Palmyra twice in the postseason. Last year, it was the Cougars knocking Warwick out of Districts and States as Palmyra won the historic double gold.
Both teams have much work to do before they meet, but given recent history, it wouldn’t feel like fall if we were deprived of a Palmyra-Warwick playoff matchup (or two!) in the coming weeks.
Plenty of talented teams litter the District 3 bracket, though, so expect Palmyra to be laser-focused on one opponent at a time as the Cougars begin their quest to repeat for District gold at home next Tuesday.
