When it comes to the Lancaster Lebanon League, there is a long, rich history. Released on February 3rd is a book that chronicles some of the most important events over the past 50 years of boys’ basketball in the LL. The 300+ page effort (appropriately titled was led by LL Hoop’s Dell Jackson and LNP’s Mike Gross. For the Lebanon County crowd, you should know that it covers the 1999 Annville-Cleona team and its star player Will Laskey. Other standouts featured are Sam Bowie (Lebanon) and Zach Hoover (Lebanon Catholic). It also includes interviews from coaches: John Barnhart (Lebanon), Scott Clentimack (Lebanon Catholic), and Chic Hess (Lebanon). This literally just scratches the surface. Check it out for yourself. Speaking of adding to the history of the Lancaster Lebanon League, the Lebanon Cedars Girls Basketball Team finished the regular season with a pristine 22-0 record. On the way to the undefeated record, they won Section 1, earning them a home game on Saturday afternoon when they will host Pequea Valley. The game starts at 1:00 pm. The winner will then face the winner of the Lancaster Catholic / Ephrata matchup, which will be played Tuesday at a neutral site.
The Cedar Crest Boys Basketball Team earned themselves a spot in the LL Playoffs as well, with an impressive road win at McCaskey on Tuesday evening to clinch the #2 spot in Section 1. They will face Columbia on the road on Monday evening.
Alex Long, the Annville-Cleona senior linebacker, was one of fifty-five football players selected from across the state of Pennsylvania to be honored with a Mini-Maxwell Award. Long accepted his award from the Maxwell Club this past Sunday at their annual banquet. All players receiving the award were nominated by their coaches for performance on the field, in the classroom, and for having a positive role through community service efforts.
Finishing up on a somber note, as the Lebanon High School community is mourning the loss of senior Julian Selman after he passed away on Monday. Selman played football for the Cedars, as well as running track, and was well known within the Lebanon school community and beyond. Please keep him in your prayers, along with those that are impacted by this sudden loss. Here is a link to his obituary. Rest in peace, #23.
