LebCo Golf: 2022 Season Recap

     Annville-Cleona Dutchmen 

Lancaster-Lebanon League Section 4

Final Record: 22-8; 2nd place; AA League Champions

Season Recap: Annville-Cleona took second in Section 4, but they were not going to let going 1-4 against Pequea Valley during the regular season affect them when it came time for the Lancaster-Lebanon League Championship.  As a team, they went on to beat Pequea Valley by seventeen strokes to capture the AA League Championship.  They then finished fourth at the District 3 Championships. Throughout the season, the Dutchmen were led by junior Reagan Flynn, who finished second at Leagues, before eventually finishing twenty-fifth at States.  Joining Flynn as a Section 4 All-Star was freshman Logan Francis, who finished fourth at Leagues.  Sophomore Wesley Heller and junior Andrew Heller rounded out Annville-Cleona’s League Championship and were named picked up Section 4 Honorable Mentions for their efforts.  Keep in mind that the Dutchmen will not graduate any member of this group prior to next season.

     Cedar Crest Falcons 

Lancaster-Lebanon League Section 1

Final Record: 17-3, 2nd place; AAA League Champions; District 3 runner-up

Season Recap: What can be said about the 2022 Cedar Crest golf season?  Outstanding.  Exemplary.  Magical.  Fun.  No matter which adjective you choose, it was one that redefined the way that people view the Falcon program.  Let’s start with the team accomplishments.  After narrowly missing out on the Section One title, the Falcons ran away with the Lancaster-Lebanon League Championship.  In doing so, they qualified five individuals for the District 3 Championship, the most of any L-L team. They then placed second at the Districts, finishing five strokes behind Dallastown, who benefitted from a hot start by the eventual District champion.  While they did not qualify as a complete team, three Falcons qualified for the PIAA State Championship Tournament.  It may also be worth mentioning that they won the Lebanon County Championship by forty-nine strokes in a format that only counted the top three golfers.  All of this success usually does not play well in the minds of opposing teams, but Cedar Crest was also chosen for the Sportsmanship Award winner for Section One.

 On the individual side there were many accomplishments, which could also be considered team accomplishments due to the competitive culture of the program.  Dylan Ramsey, the freshman phenom, became the youngest male to win the PIAA State Golf Championship.  Ramsey also won the Lebanon County Tournament, beating teammate Ethan Rader in a playoff, and was named the Lancaster-Lebanon League Male Golfer of the Year.  It was the senior Ben Feeman, who won the League Championship, went on to compete at States, and was named to the All-League Team.  Throughout the season, it was senior Jill Fidler who was the team’s number three option.  She finished third in the girls competition at the District Championship, earning her a spot at States for the second straight year, and was given Honorable Mention in Section One of the L-L.  Sophomore Ethan Rader and junior Dayton DiBiaso also loomed large for Cedar Crest throughout the season with both qualifying for Districts.  Beyond the five talented golfers mentioned, the Falcons also had sophomore Jackson Custer and freshman Carson DiBiaso, who were always ready to contribute.

 ELCO Raiders  

Lancaster-Lebanon League Section 3

Final Record: 18-7, 2nd place

Season Recap: The Raiders finished the regular season in second place in Section 3.  They qualified for the Lancaster-Lebanon League Championship as a team for the first time in recent history.  Throughout the season, they were led by senior Tyler Reed, who was named a L-L Section 3 All-Star after shooting an 84.8 average.  Senior Cole Weaver, junior Colin Bogart, sophomore Bryant Auker, and sophomore Brady Keath rounded out the scorers for ELCO.  In a final match, they played and defeated Northern Lebanon in the “Battle of the Blues”, which is an annual Ryder Cup-style match between the two programs.

     Lebanon Cedars

Lancaster-Lebanon League Section 4

Final Record: 1-29 / 6th place

Season Recap: It is not a secret that it is tough to field a golf team at a city school, however the Cedars showed up ready to compete and improve.  They were led by sophomore Gavin Sheetz (also the school’s #2 cross country option), who shot a season-low 91 in the final match of the season.  For his efforts he was recognized with a Section 4 Honorable Mention.  Hot on Sheetz’s heels was the constantly improving, fellow sophomore Ben Discuillo, who fired a 93 in the final match, down from the back-to-back 112s he fired in the first two matches of the season. The Cedars were the Section 4 Sportsmanship Award winner and will have a foundation to continue improving from in 2023, as they will not lose any of their golfers to graduation.

     Northern Lebanon Vikings

Lancaster-Lebanon League Section 4

Final Record: 8-22 / 5th place

Season Recap:  Early in the year, there was not much going right for the Vikings, yet they kept working on their game and improved as a team throughout the season.  Northern Lebanon’s top two golfers were sophomores Levi Shoemaker and Brian Bicksler, who was named as to the Section 4 Honorable Mention list (Shoemaker had similar scores, but had missed a match).  Another sophomore who improved mightily was Vincent Battistelli who shot as high as 137 and by the end of the season tied his teammates with a team season-best low score of 87.  This is another team who will not lose any of their golfers to graduation.

   Palmyra Cougars

Mid-Penn Conference – Keystone Division

Final Record: 23-19 / 4th place

Season Recap: The Cougars play in the very competitive Keystone Division of the Mid-Penn Conference.  Throughout the season, Palmyra was led by junior Sean Kelly who averaged a 77.9 score in the regular season and then finished sixth at the Mid-Penn Championships, earning a tee time at the District 3 Championships.  Kelly’s teammate senior Mason North finished twenty-second at the Mid-Penn Tournament and was named the first alternate for Districts.  Throughout the season the team was also aided by the play of senior Kevin Dromgoole and junior Alexa Knapp.  For the way that this squad competed, they were awarded the Sportsmanship Award for the Keystone Division.
