ELCO 44, Blue Mountain 35

On Saturday afternoon, the Lady Raiders went on the road to Blue Mountain in a game that produced a scoresheet that looked like a game of Battleship — thanks to the sheer number of foul shots taken.

ELCO got out to an early lead behind 10 points in the 1st quarter from Kenzie Eckhart, along with a three-pointer from Ava Seifert. The Raiders carried a 13-5 advantage into the 2nd quarter, but Blue Mountain made a push and trimmed the deficit to just one by halftime. In the frame, Blue Mountain was awarded 11 free throws and converted eight of them to make it an 18-17 game at the break.

In the 3rd quarter, ELCO again found its offensive rhythm, with Eckhart scoring 9 points as the Raiders took a 29-26 lead into the final eight minutes. Once again, the whistle stayed busy — Blue Mountain had 12 trips to the line in the quarter and hit seven.

Entering the 4th leading by three, ELCO was determined to head home from Schuylkill County with a win. Eckhartadded 7 more points, while Ava Beck went 2-for-2 at the line and Ava Mays chipped in 4 points to help seal it. Even with Blue Mountain going 5-for-6 at the stripe in the final quarter, ELCO’s steady offense and late composure proved to be the difference.

Eckhart finished with 28 points, including an 8-for-9 performance from the foul line. As a team, ELCO went 10-for-11 at the stripe. Blue Mountain scored 21 points at the line on 31 attempts. Remarkably, not one ELCO player fouled out.

ELCO (10-8) is scheduled to return to action Thursday with a home game against Northern Lebanon.

Northern Lebanon 46, Hamburg 15

After losing in a controversial manner Friday night to Lancaster Catholic, the Lady Vikings had a chance to quickly get back in the win column Saturday when they hosted Hamburg — and Northern Lebanon responded in a big way.

The Lady Vikings wasted very little time jumping out front, taking a 15-4 lead in the 1st quarter. In the opening frame, Saoirse Phillips scored 6 points, while Hayley Sheroky added 5.

Northern Lebanon put it away in the 2nd, outpacing Hamburg 21-2 to take a 36-6 lead into halftime. Kasey Weimer led the surge with 8 points in the quarter, while Sheroky added 5 more and Zeah Zerman chipped in 4.

The 2nd half didn’t offer much by way of action, as Northern Lebanon cruised to the win — including shutting Hamburg out entirely in the 3rd quarter.

For the game, Weimer led the Vikings with 13 points, including a 3-for-5 performance at the foul line. Sheroky and Phillips also reached double figures with 10 points each. Of note, Phillips was a perfect 4-for-4 from the stripe.

Friday, January 23rd

Cedar Crest 52, Lebanon 44

On Friday evening, the Cedar Crest Lady Falcons made the short trip to Lebanon for the second meeting of the season between the neighboring programs. The game was broadcast live as part of our LebCo Sports Live series and can be replayed anytime.

Cedar Crest, which won the first matchup by seven, came in riding a recent surge — but Lebanon made it clear from the opening tip that this one wasn’t going to be handed over easily.

The Falcons grabbed a 14-11 edge after one behind a big start from Elli Malinoski, who scored 10 points in the quarter. Lebanon answered right back with Olive Brandt, who poured in nine in the opening frame to keep the Cedars within striking distance.

Cedar Crest created separation in the second quarter, with Malinoski staying hot and adding seven more. Two timely three-pointers from Ryan Stopper helped the Falcons take control, as Crest carried a 34-23 lead into halftime. Brandthad eight in the quarter and entered the break with 17 points — matching Malinoski’s total.

The tempo slowed in the third as Lebanon’s defense tightened up. Brandt scored eight more, and the Cedars trimmed two points off the deficit, but Cedar Crest still held a 41-33 advantage heading to the fourth.

Lebanon kept coming in the final quarter. A three from Nina Harrison and Brandt’s perfect 6-for-6 trip to the foul line helped the Cedars apply pressure late, but Cedar Crest had the answers. Kaila Francis chipped in five points and Malinoski added six more in the fourth as the Falcons closed the door to secure the rivalry win.

Malinoski led Cedar Crest with 25 points, including two three-pointers and a perfect 4-for-4 night at the line.

Brandt was the game’s top scorer with 31 points for Lebanon, knocking down four threes and going 11-for-12 from the charity stripe.

Cedar Crest (12-6) has now won seven of its last eight and returns to action Wednesday at home against Manheim Township.
Lebanon (7-11) is also back Wednesday, hosting Hempfield.

Lancaster Catholic 37, Northern Lebanon 35

In a game that had serious consequences for the Section 3 championship, the battle between Northern Lebanon and Lancaster Catholic came down to a last-second shot and non-calls by the referees.

In the 1st quarter, Lancaster Catholic was all over the Lady Vikings on their way to building a double-digit lead. Adjustments by Northern Lebanon slowed the Crusaders’ attack in the 2nd quarter, but the Vikings still faced a 19-9 deficit at halftime.

In the 3rd quarter, Northern Lebanon began to find the basket at a more consistent rate, with Kasey Weimer scoring 9 points in the frame to help spark the comeback effort.

Still, the Vikings faced a 26-21 hole entering the 4th quarter. In the final eight minutes, Northern Lebanon showed great resolve as they battled all the way back behind 10 more points from Weimer.

While the Vikings had a chance in the closing moments, Lancaster Catholic’s final possession proved to be the difference. The Crusaders were able to create ball movement — sometimes in a way that is not allowed in the rulebook — and converted on a go-ahead basket to win it at the buzzer.

While the job of a referee is never easy, there are sometimes unfortunate results from what they see or do not see. The end of this game seems to be one of those cases.

For the Vikings, Weimer led the way with 21 points, including an incredible 9-for-9 performance at the foul line.

Northern Lebanon (13-3) will look to quickly shrug off the loss when they host Hamburg on Saturday.

On Wednesday night, the Lady Cougars hosted Lower Dauphin looking to avenge an early-season loss, while also staying on track in the postseason race.

Palmyra set the tone right away, exploding out to a 15-2 lead behind suffocating defense and a sharp offensive start. Elyse Ancharski jump-started the scoring surge, knocking down two early three-pointers to highlight the opening run.

The Cougars kept building in the 2nd quarter, taking a 27-9 lead into halftime. Kaylee Seltzer and Addi Salus each scored 5 points in the frame, and both connected from beyond the arc as Palmyra continued to control the tempo.

The pace slowed in the second half, but Palmyra never let Lower Dauphin threaten. Ancharski stayed hot, scoring 12 of Palmyra’s points over the final two quarters as the Cougars cruised to the win.

Ancharski finished with 18 points, drilling four three-pointers on six attempts. Salus added 9 points and 4 assists. Mya Doster chipped in 7 points, while also posting 8 rebounds and 4 steals to make life difficult for the Falcons.

Monday, January 19th

Palmyra 47, Hempfield 32

In a game that was broadcast as part of our new LebCo Sports Live series, the Lady Cougars entered Monday night having dropped two straight. Despite those losses, Palmyra had gone toe-to-toe with two elite opponents in Cedar Cliff and Milton Hershey, and they looked to get back on track at home in a non-league matchup against Hempfield.

The game opened at a slow pace, with neither team able to find much offensive rhythm in the 1st quarter. Palmyra held a slim 7–6 edge after one, with four of those points coming at the free-throw line—an early sign of something that would loom large as the night went on.

Things shifted in the 2nd quarter as Palmyra locked down defensively and found a spark on offense. The Cougars held Hempfield scoreless in the frame while pouring in 13 points of their own to take a commanding 20–6 lead into halftime. Kaylee Seltzer paced the scoring in the quarter with 5 points.

Hempfield pushed back in the 3rd quarter, turning the game into a much tighter contest. Palmyra answered with a balanced effort, highlighted by 5 points from Elyse Ancharski and 4 from Addi Salus, to keep the Black Knights from cutting too deeply into the lead.

Entering the 4th quarter with a 34–21 advantage, Palmyra faced a Hempfield team intent on extending the game by sending the Cougars to the line. Mya Doster put that plan to rest, going 8-for-10 at the stripe down the stretch to help seal the win.

Doster led all scorers with 16 points, as Palmyra converted 14 of 20 free-throw attempts on the night. Salus, Ancharski, and Seltzer each chipped in 7 points.
