L-S Stays Perfect in Storm-Shortened Match at Lebanon Country Club

Three matches into the Lancaster-Lebanon League Section 3 golf season, a familiar name had established itself at the front of the pack.

Lampeter-Strasburg entered Wednesday’s match at Lebanon Country Club a perfect 15-0 after sweeping each of the first three section fields. Donegal sat second at 11-4, with Northern Lebanon close behind at 10-5. ELCO entered at 5-10, Octorara at 4-11, and Lebanon at 0-15.

Then came a Section 3 match unlike the first three.

Stormy weather engulfed the region Wednesday, with conditions becoming so dark that the middle of the day looked more like nighttime. With the weather creating problems throughout the area, the match at Lebanon Country Club was shortened to nine holes.

Even with the abbreviated format, the result at the top remained the same.

Lampeter-Strasburg posted a four-player score of 152 to sweep the field for the fourth consecutive time, improving to a perfect 20-0. Donegal finished second with a 161, while ELCO turned in a strong third-place performance at 173.

Octorara followed at 179, Northern Lebanon finished fifth at 182, and host Lebanon posted a 250.

For ELCO, the third-place finish represented its best placement through the first four Section 3 matches.

Senior James Dolan continued his recent run of strong golf, shooting a 40 to lead the Raiders. Dolan was coming off a 77 at Blue Mountain on Monday, where he finished third overall.

Senior Grant Wenger was just one stroke behind with a 41, while Brady Habecker shot 44 and Boston Weiler added a 48 to complete ELCO’s four counting scores.

The Raiders’ 173 gave them three head-to-head victories on the afternoon and improved their Section 3 record to 8-12.

Northern Lebanon, meanwhile, had a more difficult day after finishing second and third in each of the section’s first three matches.

Junior Collin Padovani led the Vikings with a 40, tying Dolan for sixth overall. Ashton Yeager followed with a 45, while Tyler Hornberger shot 48 and Braden Demler added a 49 to complete Northern Lebanon’s 182.

The Vikings finished fifth Wednesday, moving their Section 3 record to 11-9.

For host Lebanon, Wednesday marked the first time this season that the Cedars had four golfers available to post a team score.

Trinity Leeper led Lebanon with a 55. Noah Cotto followed with a 63, while Landyn Strickler and Braden Measeeach shot 66. Together, the four combined for a 250. For the Cedars, it was their first team score of the year with the addition of the freshman Mease.

At the top of the individual leaderboard, Donegal’s Ryan Smeltz continued his outstanding stretch by firing a 36 to earn medalist honors. It marked his third consecutive Section 3 match with the lowest individual score after rounds of 73 at Highlands and 72 at Blue Mountain.

Lampeter-Strasburg again countered with tremendous depth. Gabe Trout and Reid Shultz each shot 37, while Chase Harsh and Colt Gibson both carded 39s. All four Pioneers finished among the top five individual positions, producing the winning 152.

With four Section 3 matches now complete, L-S remains in control with a perfect 20-0 schedule.
