Palmyra 15, Cedar Crest 9

On Friday, Palmyra traveled to Cedar Crest in a clash of two LebCo teams. What ensured was an offensive explosion by both squads.

Palmyra got on the board first in the Top 1st when a liner by Mia Morrison led to an error that allowed Kate Shenk to score. Cedar Crest quickly responded to knot the game 1-1 when Addison Nolen grounded into a fielder’s choice that allowed Julia Cole to score.

After a scoreless 2nd, Palmyra put up 3 runs in the Top 3rd to take a 4-1 lead. Following two singles and a walk, another free pass issued to Avery Cassel drove home Shay Rutter. Morrison then hit a two-run single to right, allowing two teammates to score. The Falcons were able to recover with two strikeouts to end the inning.

At the plate, Cedar Crest again responded by putting pressure on the Palmyra defense. A single and a walk were followed by three errors and a wild pitch. This allowed the Falcons to take a 5-4 lead going into the 4th.

It was in the 4th where Palmyra took control of the game with 9 runs. The effort included five hits, highlighted by an RBI single by Layla Musser and a two-run double by Rutter. To the credit of Cedar Crest, they again responded with another 3 runs to keep the game within reach.

Going into the 5th, Palmyra led 13-8. They’d tack on another 2 runs in the inning. Crest scored a run on a double by Ava Rosario to make the game 15-9, but that would be where the score would remain the final two innings of action.

Palmyra totaled 13 hits in the game, led by performances by Musser (3-5, 2B, 3 RBI, R, 2 SB) & Rutter (3-5, 2B, 3 RBI, 3 R). Morrison (3-5, 2B, 2 R, 2 RBI, BB, 2 SB) & Shenk (2-4, 2B, 3 R, BB, 3 SB) also played large roles in the victory.

For the Lady Cougars, Ema Funck pitched the complete game to pick up the win. She gave up 9 runs, with 4 of them being earned. She gave up 7 hits, while striking out 8.

Cedar Crest was led by Rosario (2-4, 2B, RBI, 2 R) & Nolen (1-4, RBI).

Palmyra (1-2) will face travel to Ephrata on Monday. Cedar Crest (1-1) will travel to Conestoga Valley on Monday.

Following Friday’s game, we caught up with Palmyra head coach Nate Kinney, who said this about his team:

Friday was a great way to end a week where I felt we got better each time out. Ema threw great helped out by great offensive performances by multiple girls. Shay and Layla both went 3-5, and Kate and Mia went 2-4. It was a real team effort for that win yesterday. That’s what we need moving forward. We will continue to get better each day. We are working to refine the one percent changes, while working together to build on our successes. These girls really work together well and I can’t wait to see what we can accomplish the rest of the way.”

Cedar Crest opened their season with a dynamic team effort to defeat William Penn in just three innings. Though on the road, the Falcons made themselves right at home, collecting 13 hits that accounted for 19 runs. Just as importantly, Crest did not commit any errors in the field.

In the Top 1st, Cedar Crest got warmed up with two runs. The first run came across the plate when Kate Poorman singled home Kya Sherwood. Two batters later, Poorman scored from third base when William Penn chose to throw out the runner attempting to steal second. William Penn then scored two runs in their first at-bat, making the score 2-2 at the end of the 1st inning.

The score would note remain tied very long, as the floodgates opened, and Cedar Crest scored 11 runs in the 2nd inning. They went on to add another 6 runs in the 3rd, forcing the game to end under the ten-run mercy rule.

Julia Cole was the main culprit in the scoring bonanza, as she went 3-4, 2 – 3B, 2 R, with an astounding 6 RBI. Poorman was 3-4, 2B, 3 R, 3 RBI. Gwen Zimmerman hit a two-run home run to get the 2nd inning scoring started. Addison Nolen, Mia Lutz, Lydia McClintic, Ava Rosario, Elli Malinoski, and Peyton Burkey each had a hit and an RBI.

Lebanon 15, Garden Spot 2 [F/5]

Last season, the Cedars won two games. On Monday, they made it halfway to matching last year’s total with a mercy-rule shortened victory over Garden Spot.

The game was tied 2-2 until the 4th inning when the Cedars scored 8 runs. They followed it up with another 5 runs in the 5th. With the Spartans unable to get any offense going against senior Sereniti Zidik, the game was called.

The Cedars benefitted from some plate discipline that allowed them to draw 18 walks, while an additional batter was hit by a pitch. As a result, their 15 runs came off of just 5 hits.

Emily Ficks-Seitz led the offensive effort with 3 hits, going 3-4, R, RBI, BB. Jenna Seyfert was 1-3, 2 RBI, 3 R, 2BB. Also weighing heavily in the scoring were Zidik (H, RBI, R, BB), Katrina Leary (3 RBI, 2 R, 3 BB), and Makenzie Swisher (2 RBI, 3 R, 2 BB).

Over the course of 5 innings, Zidik gave up 2 runs on 3 hits while collecting 7 Ks and issuing 2 walks. With this performance, Zidik recorded her 200th career strikeout.

Lebanon (1-0) will look to keep things going on Friday when they travel to play Reading.
