Alivia Kline
This year is the first season for the ELCO Unified Track & Field Program. Among the participants is freshman Alivia Kline. On April 24th, Alivia ran her best 100m against Penn Manor to finish in 1st place, setting a new personal record of 23.95. More impactful than even her winning performance is the impact that the young athlete has had by encouraging her teammates to keep improving. As a result of her great work, the LebCoSports.com community chose Alivia as the LebCo Female Athlete of the Week.
So, what is Unified Sports? As described on the Special Olympics website, Unified Sports provide “opportunities for students both with all types of disabilities and without disabilities to participate in sports meaningfully and by engaging other students in the school community, Interscholastic Unified Sports (IUS) helps promote inclusion, acceptance, and respect.”
Currently, ELCO is one of three schools in LebCo that offers any type of Unified Sports. Lebanon added a Track & Field program this season, while Palmyra has an established Bocce Ball team. Soccer is the third sport that is offered in the world of Unified Sports. As the programs continue to grow, it would not be surprising to see many of our local student-athletes having more opportunities to get involved.
ELCO has thirteen students as a part of its inaugural Unified Sports Track & Field Team. Alivia was initially hesitant about becoming one of the participants but is glad that she challenged herself to go out for the team. She has continued to work hard and, in the most recent meet, set a new PR of 22.75. In the same meet, she PR’d in her other favorite event when she threw the Turbo Javelin 3.92 meters to take 2nd place.
Alivia’s role as a good teammate is not something that happened by accident. She is adopted and, after moving around a lot in her younger years (including living in Buffalo, New York, for a time), has settled into life on the farm, where she enjoys tending to the needs of her animals. While she loves all the animals, the cows are her favorite.
In the future, she would like to move to Florida and work for the Humane Society. Her love of puppies is something that she is not shy about.
When she is not on the farm, Alivia enjoys being outside and walking. She is bilingual, speaking English and Spanish.
She is a member of the church youth group at ECC. In addition to going to church on Sundays, Alivia is always excited to cheer for her Philadelphia Eagles.
We hope that Alivia continues to challenge her own limits. We wish her and all of the Unified Sports athletes the best as they compete the remainder of this season and beyond.
