PIAA State Girls Basketball Tournament: Northern Lebanon Falls to Allentown Central Catholic, Gains Experience for Future Success

After finishing 4th in District 3, Northern Lebanon was matched up against Allentown Central Catholic in a battle between Vikings. Central Catholic entered the PIAA State Championship as the District 11 Champion, looking to improve upon making it to last year’s State Quarterfinals, where they lost to Lansdale Catholic, the eventual champion.

In the 1st quarter, Northern Lebanon was led by Olivia Shutter with 4 points and Hayley Sheroky, who hit a three-pointer. Central Catholic was able to set a tone in the quarter where they would be able to put up points faster than the opponent, as they ended the period holding a 13-7 advantage. This continued into the 2nd quarter as Central Catholic again scored 6 points more than the visiting Vikings. Shutter finished the half with 11 points, as Northern Lebanon trailed 31-19.

In the 3rd quarter, the Central Catholic defense again made it difficult for Northern Lebanon to score. Despite this, Shutter hit two three-pointers, but it wasn’t enough. Going into the final quarter, Northern Lebanon found itself down 48-26. They didn’t quit and had their most successful quarter in terms of offense, as they were finally able to spread the ball around. Unfortunately, it would not be enough as Allentown Central Catholic earned the victory.

Shutter finished the game with 24 points, a performance that included four three-pointers. Central Catholic was led with 25 points from Armani Brickhouse (no word on how she feels about the Commodores).

The loss brings a close to Northern Lebanon’s season as they finish with a 19-8 record. This experience should lay a foundation for next season, as the Vikings are set to return their entire roster.
