Dutchmen Take Second at Crossgates, Remain Atop Section 4
Annville-Cleona entered Wednesday looking to continue its strong run through the Lancaster-Lebanon League Section 4 schedule after returning to the top of the field in last week’s weather-shortened match at Fairview Golf Course.
On a sunny but steamy afternoon at Crossgates Golf Club, Lancaster Mennonite’s home course, Pequea Valley had the lowest number.
The Braves fired a four-player score of 314 to win the latest Section 4 match. Annville-Cleona finished nine strokes back in second with a 323, while Lancaster Catholic took third at 343. Lancaster Mennonite (364) and Lancaster Country Day (390) rounded out the field.
Despite missing out on the team victory, A-C again had several golfers near the top of the individual leaderboard.
Freshman Jefferson Allwein led the Dutchmen with a 76 (+4), tying Lancaster Mennonite’s Blake Madonna for third overall. Pequea Valley’s Max Hershey earned medalist honors with an even-par 72, while Lancaster Country Day’s Felix Chen finished second with a 75.
For Jefferson Allwein, it was another strong performance in what has quickly developed into an impressive freshman season. He has now posted a 76 twice in Section 4 competition, including his runner-up performance at Conestoga that helped earn him a nomination for LebCo Athlete of the Week.
His older brother wasn’t far behind.
Sophomore Benjamin Allwein, Section 4’s top golfer and an eighth-place state finisher last season, carded a 79 (+7) to finish sixth overall. Together, the Allwein brothers gave the Dutchmen two golfers inside the top six.
Sophomore Will Kerwin added an 82 (+10), tying for seventh overall and giving A-C three golfers inside the top seven positions.
Freshman Trey Schrefler provided the fourth counting score with an 86 (+14), completing the Dutchmen’s 323. Freshman Jameson Rabena shot an 89, while senior Aidan Lezon finished with a 91.
Pequea Valley’s victory tightened the Section 4 race. Hershey’s medalist 72 and a 77 from Chase Dizel helped the Braves post their winning 314, nine strokes ahead of A-C.
Still, the runner-up finish gave Annville-Cleona three more head-to-head victories and moved the Dutchmen to 14-2 through four section matches.
Pequea Valley improved to 12-4, while Lancaster Catholic moved to 11-5, leaving all three teams within striking distance as the Section 4 schedule moves toward its conclusion.
For A-C, Wednesday offered another reminder of the depth within its young lineup. Jefferson Allwein led the way this time, Benjamin Allwein remained near the top of the leaderboard, and Kerwin gave the Dutchmen a third top-seven finisher.
The Section 4 teams will return to action next Tuesday at Honeybrook Golf Club.
