Makenna Haas
On Friday, February 16th, at the Garden State Ocean Breeze Invitational in Staten Island, New York, Makenna Haas beat the field to win the Triple Jump. Her leap of 36’8” sent a new ELCO record and qualified her for the PTFCA Indoor State Championships. This performance caught the attention of the LebCoSports.com voters, as they chose her as the LebCo Female Athlete of the Week.
The junior’s performance was not a one-time occurrence this season, as she also took 1st place in the Triple Jump at the Lebanon Valley College Invite and the Lancaster PAL’s LL Challenge. Yesterday, she concluded her season with a 12th place finish at States.
Coach Holly Hartman said of Haas, “Makenna has shown a true interest in becoming a better athlete. She is starting to show maturity as a young woman who has goals and is willing to work hard to achieve them.”
That hard work is paying off, something Hartman believes will motivate Haas even further: “I believe qualifying for indoor states may be a turning point in her career because she wants to commit to lifting and healthy eating so she can continue to get stronger.”
In addition to her ability to jump, Haas is also a valuable runner for the ELCO Raiders, serving as a sprinter. Track & Field is not Haas’s only outlet for her competitive nature, as she has excelled in Field Hockey. This past season, she was a key member of the Raider team that won Section 3 and made States. For her efforts in the classroom during the Field Hockey season, she received a PAFHSCA Academic Award.
Haas would like to continue to work on Triple Jumping and work towards having the opportunity to do it in college. As she continues to work hard, we look forward to seeing what she is about to achieve during the Spring season.
