DISTRICT THREE PLAYOFFS
Friday, February 23
Cumberland Valley 41, Cedar Crest 34
After an exciting win over Wilson to open Districts, the Falcons traveled to take on the Cumberland Valley Eagles, the #2 seed, who finished the regular season with a 19-3 record and then won the Mid Penn Conference Championship. This battle of the birds was a compelling matchup of two excellent teams poised to extend their seasons beyond Districts.
This game started slowly, with Cumberland Valley leading 5-4 after the 1st quarter. The Eagles then went on a run to extend the lead to 10-4 before Crest responded with a run of their own. RJ Young and Owen Chernich each scored 5 points in the 2nd quarter, as the Falcons posted a 20-13 lead at halftime.
In the 3rd quarter, Young scored 6 points, but Cumberland Valley otherwise slowed the Cedar Crest offense as they brought the game back to within one point by the end of the period. With the Falcons clinging to a 28-27 lead going into the 4th quarter, the Eagles continued what would end up being a 22-8 run to finish the game.
Young led the Falcons with 13 points in the game. Cumberland Valley’s Nolan Buzalka scored 10 of his 13 points in the 2nd half, while Jake Snyder scored all eight of his points after the break.
Cedar Crest (20-6) will now move into the consolation round, where they will have to win one of their next two games to make States. Up first will be a road game against Carlisle on Tuesday night.

Cedar Crest 55, Wilson 50
Last season, the Falcons lost to Wilson in the opening round of Districts. That was then, and this is now. Last year, it was a 7/10 matchup, with Wilson hosting. This year, Crest held the #10 seed and homecourt advantage. After defeating Warwick with a game of complete team basketball, Crest rolled into Districts, confidently going to battle against Wilson, the Berks League Champion.
The 1st quarter showed early in the game that it would be a dogfight between the two teams. After the opening period, Crest held a 1-point advantage, led by Fernando Marquez and his 5 points, including a rare three-pointer. The 2nd quarter was much the same, as Danny Speaks hit his second three of the night to lead the Falcons to a 24-22 halftime lead.
In the 3rd quarter, Cedar Crest adjusted and broke away from the Bulldogs. Aiden Schomp scored 8 points in the quarter, including one of the four threes Crest nailed. Heading into the 4th with a 12-point lead, Crest quickly faced pressure from Wilson’s press. The visitors used the defensive effort to claw their way back into the game, but 5 points from Marquez and timing free throws helped to rebuff the comeback attempt.
Marquez and Schomp each had 15 points to lead Crest in the victory. Speaks finished the game with 9 points, hitting three of Cedar Crest’s seven three-pointers. Owen Chernich scored 5 points but was otherwise doing it all, including collecting seven steals.
Cedar Crest (20-5) will travel to play #2 Cumberland Valley on Friday night.

Delone Catholic 57, Annville-Cleona 40
The Dutchmen qualified for Districts with a late-season push to secure the 6th and final spot. As a result, Annville had the challenging task of traveling to play at Delone Catholic (17-5).
The game got out to a slow start on the offensive end, as Annville held their ground. At the end of the 1st quarter, the Dutchmen trailed by a single point following a pair of threes by Elisha Slabach and Jon Shay. The game flipped when Delone used a solid 2nd quarter to build a 29-14 halftime lead. While Annville battled throughout the 2nd half, they could not get any closer. Anthony Pena used a solid 4th quarter performance to score 8 points and cut the deficit down the final stretch.
Leading the Dutchmen in the scoring department was Slabach, who finished the game with 15 points, including two three-pointers.
Annville-Cleona (10-13) will now begin to reflect on the success they found this season and start to work towards next year.
