Northern Lebanon 28, Susquehannock 3
It is officially the postseason for high school football. On Friday, November 6th, the Northern Lebanon Vikings traveled to Susquehannock to take on the Warriors in the first round of the PIAA District 3 Class 4A Playoffs. The Vikings entered as heavy underdogs, as a Week 10 loss to the ELCO Raiders had nearly eliminated them from playoff contention.
The game started off with plenty of drama, as Northern Lebanon drove inside the Warriors’ 10-yard line. However, two penalties forced the Vikings to attempt a 42-yard field goal. The kick was no good, and Northern Lebanon missed an opportunity to strike early.
The first quarter featured a strong defensive effort from both teams, with the score remaining 0-0 after one.
Northern Lebanon head coach Nate Monroe had mentioned the importance of starting fast defensively during his interview with LebCoSports, and the Vikings were doing exactly that.
The second quarter remained quiet until Northern Lebanon finally struck first. Quarterback Ryan Clemmer connected with Brady Ryan for a 66-yard touchdown, putting the Vikings ahead 7-0 with 4:05 remaining in the first half.
Susquehannock did not waste any time responding. The Warriors drove inside the Northern Lebanon 25-yard line, giving themselves an opportunity to put points on the board with just 41.1 seconds remaining.
The Warriors were unable to tie the game, but a 25-yard field goal from Ian Bailey sent the teams into halftime with Northern Lebanon leading 7-3.
The Vikings were set to receive the second-half kickoff and had an opportunity to extend their lead to two scores.
However, the second half started as an absolute nightmare for Northern Lebanon.
Bailey recovered the kickoff, giving Susquehannock possession and an opportunity to take the lead. The Warriors were unable to capitalize, though, and the Vikings took advantage.
Ryan broke free for a 41-yard rushing touchdown, extending Northern Lebanon’s lead to 14-3. The run also pushed Ryan over 100 rushing yards for the game.
The Vikings would turn the ball over again, giving Susquehannock possession at the Northern Lebanon 43-yard line. It was another opportunity the Warriors could not afford to waste.
However, Northern Lebanon’s defense remained disciplined and forced a 22-yard field goal attempt, which was no good.
The Vikings carried their 14-3 lead into the fourth quarter, while Susquehannock was left wondering what could have been after another missed opportunity.
If things could not get uglier for the Warriors, they did.
After driving down to the Northern Lebanon 12-yard line, Susquehannock missed another field goal wide left. The Vikings remained ahead by 11 points and were now just ten minutes away from securing the first playoff victory in program history.
Northern Lebanon later had a field goal called back because of a penalty, giving Susquehannock another chance to cut into the deficit. With just 5:41 remaining, time was beginning to run out for the Warriors.
Once again, another opportunity went to waste. The Vikings came up with an interception deep in their own territory, getting the football back with 4:28 remaining.
Ryan continued to show just how dominant he can be, scoring his third touchdown of the night on a 20-yard run. The score extended Northern Lebanon’s lead to 21-3 with under three minutes remaining.
The bleeding did not stop there for Susquehannock.
Bryce Yocum intercepted a pass and returned it 42 yards for a touchdown, putting the Vikings ahead 28-3 and putting the finishing touches on a historic night.
From there, Northern Lebanon was able to slam the door and head home with a victory.
For Susquehannock, it was a tough way to end what had been a strong season. The Warriors had several opportunities to put points on the board, but missed chances in the red zone proved to be the difference.
For Northern Lebanon, Friday night’s victory was much more than just another win.
After nearly missing the postseason entirely, the Vikings went on the road and picked up the first District 3 playoff victory in program history.
Northern Lebanon’s postseason journey will continue next Friday night when the Vikings travel to York County to take on No. 2 seed Hanover in the second round of the District 3 Class 4A Playoffs.

Cedar Crest 56, Hempfield 49
If there was ever a game that showed what playoff football is all about, Friday night at Earl Boltz Stadium was it. The Cedar Crest Falcons welcomed the Hempfield Black Knights for the opening round of the District 3 Class 6A playoffs, facing a familiar opponent they had already defeated earlier this season, 28-19. With the season on the line, the Falcons found themselves in a shootout that featured explosive plays, momentum swings, and a remarkable fourth-quarter comeback. Down 42-28, Cedar Crest scored 28 unanswered points to pull off an unforgettable 56-49 victory.
The Falcons opened the game by making a statement on defense. Kasen Dudek brought down the Hempfield quarterback for a sack, helping Cedar Crest force a three-and-out on the Black Knights’ opening possession. The offense quickly took advantage. Steven Reyes took control of the opening drive before connecting with Antonio Tirado for a 13-yard touchdown. Gabe Kaighn added the extra point, giving the Falcons an early 7-0 lead.
Hempfield responded with an explosive play of its own. Landon Charles looked deep for Donte Lewis, who came down with a 46-yard touchdown reception after the ball deflected off a Cedar Crest defensive back. The extra point tied the game at 7-7 as the first quarter came to a close.
The Black Knights carried that momentum into the second quarter. After putting together an 85-yard drive, Ramel Lyles found a hole and rushed four yards into the end zone, giving Hempfield its first lead at 14-7.
Reyes and the Falcons were not going to back down. Reyes connected with Kai Speaks for a first down before finding him again for a 40-yard completion. A late-hit penalty added another 15 yards, putting Cedar Crest in excellent field position. However, Hempfield came up with a huge special-teams play, blocking the Falcons’ field goal attempt.
The Cedar Crest defense answered with a stop of its own, as Damyen Derr helped force a three-and-out. The Falcons offense went back to work, with Reyes finding Tirado to move into scoring position. Reyes then connected with Terrance Wilson across the middle for a seven-yard touchdown with just 35 seconds remaining in the first half. The extra point tied the game at 14-14, sending both teams into halftime even at Earl Boltz Stadium.
Cedar Crest received the second-half kickoff, but Hempfield quickly forced a stop. The Black Knights turned that defensive momentum into points, as Charles found Orion Abrams for a 34-yard touchdown to put Hempfield back in front, 21-14.
The Falcons had another answer ready. Reyes connected with Speaks, who pitched the ball to Jackson Smith for a first down. Building on that momentum, Reyes found Tirado for a deep completion into Black Knights territory. Reyes then kept the ball himself, putting his head down and taking off for a 30-yard quarterback touchdown run. The score brought Cedar Crest even at 21-21.
Hempfield appeared to be facing another three-and-out, but the Black Knights caught the Falcons off guard with a fake punt that picked up the first down. They made the most of the opportunity, as Charles connected with Lewis for a 53-yard touchdown to put Hempfield back in front, 28-21.
The Black Knights continued to find success on the ground, with Lyles scoring his second touchdown of the night to extend the advantage to 35-21. As the fourth quarter began, Cedar Crest suddenly found itself facing a two-touchdown deficit with its season on the line.
The Falcons were not ready to let their season end. Reyes led a quick and effective drive, finding Skyler Sherman for a touchdown to bring Cedar Crest within one score at 35-28.
Hempfield continued to lean on its ground game, and Lyles found the end zone for the third time, pushing the Black Knights’ lead to 42-28. With time running out, Cedar Crest needed something special, and the Falcons delivered in a hurry.
In just two plays and approximately 35 seconds, Reyes connected with Speaks for a 58-yard touchdown. Suddenly, the Falcons were back within seven at 42-35.
Then came another major defensive play. Skyler Sherman came up with an interception, returning the ball and giving Cedar Crest possession at the Hempfield seven-yard line. Reyes finished the opportunity with a quarterback sneak, tying the game at 42-42. The Falcons had erased a 14-point deficit and brought the home crowd to life.
The defense followed with another three-and-out, giving Cedar Crest an opportunity to take its first lead since the opening quarter. The Falcons opened up the playbook with a flea-flicker. Reyes found Sherman, who then connected with Tirado for a huge completion into Hempfield territory. A play fake set up Reyes to find Mason Cevette for a touchdown, completing the comeback and giving Cedar Crest its first lead since the first quarter at 49-42.
The momentum continued to swing in the Falcons’ favor. After a false-start penalty against Hempfield, Dudek forced a fumble, giving Cedar Crest possession in Black Knights territory. Reyes took advantage once again, faking a quarterback sneak before breaking loose for a 23-yard touchdown run with five minutes remaining. Cedar Crest had scored 28 unanswered points, turning a 42-28 deficit into a 56-42 advantage.
Hempfield refused to go away quietly. Jackson Chernich recorded a sack with approximately three minutes remaining, but the Black Knights continued fighting. Lyles scored his fourth touchdown of the night, cutting the Falcons’ lead to 56-49.
The Black Knights attempted an onside kick, but the ball went out of bounds, giving Cedar Crest possession at midfield. With the game still within one score, the Falcons faced a crucial fourth-and-four. In a fitting twist, Cedar Crest turned to a fake punt of its own, and Garrett Starry made the play to pick up the first down and keep the ball out of Hempfield’s hands. The Falcons held on to secure a remarkable 56-49 victory.
Cedar Crest improves to 8-3 and advances in the District 3 Class 6A playoffs after one of the most thrilling wins of its season. Reyes and the Falcons’ offense delivered when it mattered most, while the defense came up with the interceptions and forced fumble that helped fuel the comeback. Hempfield’s Lyles also deserves recognition after finding the end zone four times in a tremendous effort.
As I’ve said throughout our weekly podcast episodes, every possession matters, every mistake can be costly, and every team is fighting to keep its season alive. The Falcons lived that reality Friday night, refusing to back down even when they trailed by 14 in the fourth quarter. Their season continues, and they will now prepare for a District 3 quarterfinal matchup against Manheim Township next Friday.

Conrad Weiser 20, ELCO 6
ELCO entered Friday night’s District 3 Class 4A playoff matchup against Conrad Weiser knowing it would be a tough battle on the road. The Raiders had defeated the Scouts earlier in the season at home, but with playoff football and a rivalry matchup combined, this game had the potential to go either way.
Both teams got off to a slow start offensively, with neither able to put points on the board in the first quarter. ELCO broke off a few big runs and showed some promise moving the football, but the Raiders struggled to finish drives.
The score remained tied 0-0 heading into the second quarter.
Conrad Weiser finally broke through early in the second quarter. A 20-yard pass helped move the Scouts down the field before a 20-yard touchdown run gave the home team a 7-0 lead with 7:41 remaining in the half.
ELCO continued to battle, drawing Conrad Weiser offsides with under two minutes remaining. The Raiders also had opportunities to make important defensive plays but were unable to capitalize.
The Scouts carried their 7-0 advantage into halftime, leaving ELCO within striking distance heading into the second half.
The third quarter featured more of the same, with both teams putting together slow, methodical drives. Neither offense was able to generate much momentum until Conrad Weiser broke through again.
With 4:23 remaining in the third quarter, the Scouts found the end zone on another rushing touchdown, extending their lead to 14-0.
ELCO entered the fourth quarter needing to make something happen offensively, but Conrad Weiser struck first.
Early in the final quarter, a big passing play helped set up another Scouts touchdown. Although the extra-point attempt was unsuccessful, Conrad Weiser had extended its advantage to 20-0.
For Conrad Weiser, Kupper accounted for two of the Scouts’ three touchdowns, while Sellers scored the other.
The Raiders refused to go away quietly.
With 8:41 remaining, quarterback Brinley Donmoyer connected with Cameron Tillison on a 20-yard pass that moved ELCO into scoring position.
Just over a minute later, Donmoyer kept the football himself and found the end zone for a rushing touchdown with 7:38 remaining, cutting the deficit to 20-6.
The touchdown gave ELCO some life, but Conrad Weiser responded with a 40-yard rushing play that helped keep the pressure on the Raiders.
ELCO continued looking for a way back into the game. With 4:06 remaining, the Raiders attempted a trick play using the Philly Special, but the play resulted in an interception.
Conrad Weiser’s defense came up with another big play late, recording a sack with 1:12 remaining as the Scouts closed out the 20-6 victory.
For ELCO, the loss brings its season to an end with a 6-5 record. Despite falling short on Friday night, the Raiders put together another winning regular season and earned an opportunity to compete in the District 3 playoffs.
Conrad Weiser advances to the Class 4A quarterfinals, where the Scouts will travel to face top-seeded West York next week.
