Kurtz, Adewale Lead ELCO at Pine Grove Invitational
Friday night in Schuylkill County, ELCO turned in a tremendous all-around showing at the Pine Grove Invitational, taking on 23 teams and coming away with 11 total awards. With medals going to 1st through 3rd and ribbons awarded for 4th through 6th, the Raiders made their mark throughout the evening with standout efforts on both the track and in the field.
Leading the way for ELCO were senior Avery Kurtz and sophomore Seyitan Adewale, who each landed on the medal stand in big ways. Kurtz delivered the Raiders’ lone gold medal by winning the boys discus with a throw of 148’9″, while Adewale earned silver in the girls high jump after clearing 4’10”. Their performances gave ELCO top-end results on both the boys and girls sides and helped set the tone for the rest of the night.
The Raiders also had a huge showing in the boys distance events. Sophomores Max Frederick and Cru Frederick turned the boys 3200m into a major ELCO moment, with Max racing to silver in 10:07.62 and Cru following for bronze in 10:13.46. That one-two finish stood out as one of the Raiders’ biggest highlights of the evening.
ELCO’s girls added another medal in the relays, as the 4×800 team took bronze in 10:47.84. That effort pushed the Raiders to four total medals on the night and reinforced just how balanced the team was from one event group to the next.
Beyond the medal winners, the ELCO girls stacked up several more award-winning performances. Ava Seifert placed 4th in the 800m with a time of 2:35.24, Alexa Shanaman added a 4th-place finish in the javelin with a throw of 94’7″, and Kierra Sholl chipped in a 6th-place effort in the triple jump at 31’11”.
The boys matched that depth with a strong collection of ribbon finishes of their own. Cole Doster placed 4th in the 800m in 2:07.25, Dalton Pyszka took 5th in the javelin with a throw of 131’5″, and the boys 4×800 relay earned 6th in 9:20.63. Just outside the awards, ELCO also got quality efforts from Wyatt Gawrys, David Sinyagin, Eddie Pena, and Caden Behm.
All told, it was an impressive night for ELCO, which showed off both top-end talent and event-by-event depth while filling the results sheet with award-winning performances.
