Moran, Barger Lead Way as Lebanon County Athletes Make Statement at Jack Roddick Invitational
Saturday, the 99th Jack Roddick Invitational took place at Shippensburg University, the same venue that in just a month will host the District 3 Championships before the PIAA State Championships on Memorial Day weekend. With temperatures reaching into the 70s, it made for an ideal day for running action. Four Lebanon County programs took place at this highly competitive meet with Annville-Cleona, ELCO, Northern Lebanon, and Palmyra among the 103 schools competing from across Pennsylvania. By the end of the day local athletes had brought home six medals, including two golds.
The day was headlined by Annville-Cleona senior David Moran and Palmyra senior Jaxton Barger, two athletes with proven championship success on the Shippensburg stage. Moran, last year’s PIAA Class AA 800m champion, returned to the track where he ran 1:56.17 to win a state title and raised the bar yet again Saturday by claiming the boys 800m in a personal-best 1:54.89. Not long after, Barger delivered Lebanon County’s other event title by winning the boys pole vault at 15’6″. For two seniors already familiar with shining at Shippensburg, it was another statement performance on one of Pennsylvania’s biggest regular-season stages.
On the girls side, Palmyra’s Maddy Waldron turned in one of the county’s top track performances by taking 4th in the 200m in 25.28 after also placing 12th in the 100m. The Cougars also added a relay medal in the girls 4×100 Relay, where Allie Fink, Emily Bearinger, Waldron, and Izzy Weber combined for an 8th-place finish in 49.52.
Annville-Cleona’s distance depth and Lebanon County’s mid-distance strength were on display beyond Moran’s win. Oliver Funck earned a bronze medal in the boys 1600m with a 4:21.52, while Northern Lebanon’s Luke Hentz raced to 4th in a loaded boys 800m field in 1:58.73 to add another local medal.
Among the other strong local efforts, Northern Lebanon’s Emma Yordy cleared 4’11” to place 10th in the girls high jump, just one spot shy of the medals. Annville-Cleona flexed it’s distance depth with Benjamin Boyd adding a 9th-place finish in the boys 1600m with a 4:28.72, while Mackenzie Stellmach placed 15th in the girls 3200m in 11:34.83. ELCO’s Avery Kurtz rounded out the notable non-medal performances by taking 17th in the boys discus at 137’5″, less than 24 hours after also winning the Pine Grove Invitational title on Friday night.
All told, it was a productive day for Lebanon County athletes at one of the spring’s premier invitationals, with 2 event titles, 6 total medals, and several more strong performances posted on the same facility that will soon serve as the center of the postseason.
