Myerstown Youth Legion Concludes Season at Regionals

After winning the LebCo Youth Legion Championship, Myerstown took part in the Eastern Regional Tournament held this past weekend in Boyertown. With eight teams participating, it was a double-elimination tournament.

Though Myerstown will not be moving on to States, they competed hard against some very strong talent. Below are quick recaps of the two games in which they competed on Friday and Saturday.

Game 1: Fort Washington 6, Myerstown 0

On Friday morning, Myerstown squared off against Fort Washington. The game was scoreless through five innings, with Myerstown’s Blake Gipe in control. He was aided in the 3rd inning by a beautiful double play and catcher Grady Auker throwing out two Fort Washington runners trying to steal third base in the Top 1st.

Unfortunately, the 6th inning turned the tide when Fort Washington broke by stringing together a series of hits and walks that resulted in six runs. This would be all that they would need to take the ball game. Fort Washington pitcher Brandon Noonan allowed one Myerstown hit, a 1st inning single by Queston Rivera. Myerstown did draw four walks, but none of the runners made it home.

Game 2: Swoyersville 11, Myerstown 1

Friday’s loss sent Myerstown into a must-win scenario against Swoyersville on Saturday morning. The team from Luzerne County was facing the possibility of their own elimination after suffering a loss to Hamburg on Friday. Swoyersville was not ready to go home and held Myerstown in check, limiting the LebCo representative to just one hit. For the second straight game, it was Queston Rivera who had the team’s only hit, this time a single to lead off the 4th inning. Myerstown scored their only run in the 5th inning when a series of errors and heads-up baserunning led to Jordan Root scoring.

Rivera was on the mound for Myerstown and while he recorded four strikeouts in two innings, Swoyersville was able to amass six runs. Eventually Swoyersville made the score 11-1 to end the game in the Bottom 5th.

Myerstown finished the season as the LebCo regular season and playoff champions. Their final record was 14-4.
