Day 1 of the District 3 Track & Field Championships was quite an exciting one for our local LebCo athletes. The contingent has already claimed thirteen medals and ten invitations to next weekend’s State Championship Meet. Additionally, LebCo athletes have secured thirteen spots in Saturday’s finals.
Friday’s action was highlighted by Eliana Schneider’s win in the Javelin. The Cedar Crest sophomore also finished 4th in the High Jump, qualifying for States in both events. In the Javelin, she will be joined by Palmyra’s Sofie Price, who finished in third. Cedar Crest’s Dylan Groff finished 5th in the boys’ competition to pick up a State berth. Lebanon’s Zariyah Whigham also claimed a bronze medal in the 3A Long Jump, ahead of going into Saturday’s Triple Jump as the top seed. Palmyra’s Jacob Burgess finished 4th in the boys’ Long Jump.
Annville-Cleona had a fine day on Friday, nabbing seven medals. Mackenzie Stellmach and Emily Maag went 2nd and 3rd in the 3200m, while Landon Hostetter and Oliver Funck did the same in the boys’ race. Madison Long finished the Long Jump with a silver medal. In the 3A race, Northern Lebanon’s Tyler Shunk just missed a medal, but again lowered his school record time.
In terms of top seeds, LebCo athletes Kaddel Howard (Cedar Crest) and Tyler Burgess (Palmyra) will be the favorites in two events on Saturday. Howard is the #1 seed in the 200m and the 400m. In the 200m, she will be matched up against the three-time defending State Champ, Laila Campbell of Spring Grove. Burgess holds the top seed in both Hurdle events. He is knocking on the door of a meet record in the 300m Hurdles after again lowering his time on Friday. See below for all of the athletes who advanced to Saturday’s Finals.
Another thing to watch on Saturday will be the team title races where the Annville Girls look to defend their District Championship and the Cedar Crest Girls are looking to make noise after finishing high on the leaderboard on the first day of action.
Below are the results for every LebCo athlete. Medal winners are highlighted in this color. Athletes advancing to the Finals are highlighted in this color. The full results from the meet are linked at the bottom.
