Northern Lebanon Rides Early Offense, Gonzalez Gem to District Win Over Middletown

On Monday, May 18th, the top-seeded Northern Lebanon baseball team opened the District 3 Playoffs with a home quarterfinal matchup against #8 Middletown. With their season on the line, the Vikings turned to Adrian Gonzalez on the mound, and the senior delivered a complete-game performance to help Northern Lebanon earn an 8-2 win.

The Vikings wasted little time giving Gonzalez support. After he opened the game with a pair of strikeouts in the top of the 1st, Landon Copenhaver started the bottom half by getting aboard. Owen Fahringer followed with an RBI single down the right-field line to put Northern Lebanon ahead 1-0. From there, the Vikings kept the pressure on, as Conner Stoltz reached on a bunt, Christian Anspach put the ball in play to bring in another run, Kaden Beamesderfer was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded, and Tyler Hornberger drew a bases-loaded walk to stretch the lead to 4-0.

Gonzalez stayed sharp from there, striking out two more in the 2nd and adding another pair of strikeouts in the 3rd. Through three innings, he had already recorded six strikeouts while keeping Middletown off the scoreboard.

Northern Lebanon added to its lead in the bottom of the 3rd. Anspach started the inning with a single before Blake Burdick drove him in with an RBI triple to center field to make it 5-0. Ryan Clemmer followed with a sacrifice fly, extending the Vikings’ advantage to 6-0.

Middletown broke through in the 4th after George Hartwick tripled and came home on a sacrifice fly, cutting the deficit to 6-1. But Gonzalez limited the damage and kept the Blue Raiders from building any further momentum.

The Vikings answered in the bottom of the 4th. Copenhaver singled, and Fahringer followed with an RBI triple to push the lead to 7-1. Stoltz drew a walk, and Anspach drove in another run later in the inning to make it 8-1.

From there, Gonzalez kept working. He added another strikeout in the 5th, another in the 6th, and returned to the mound in the 7th to finish the game. Middletown scored once more on a sacrifice fly after putting together a pair of singles, but Gonzalez closed the door to secure the 8-2 victory.

Fahringer and Copenhaver helped set the tone at the top of the order, collecting two hits apiece while hitting back-to-back in the lineup. Fahringer and Anspach each drove in two runs, while Northern Lebanon also backed Gonzalez with a clean defensive effort, committing no errors. Stoltz was especially busy behind the plate, finishing with nine chances in the field.

That steady approach was the focus after the game, as Northern Lebanon left the field with another postseason win and another home game ahead.

Coach Thome said it was good to get that first one done with. He pointed to the Vikings’ pitching, defense, and timely hitting, while also emphasizing that the team’s focus now shifts to preparing for Thursday and continuing to take the season one game at a time.

That message was echoed by the players, who kept their postgame thoughts short and focused on what comes next.

Gonzalez kept it simple: “Let’s get Thursday.”

Burdick added, “Let’s keep the bats hot.”

Fahringer summed up the team’s mindset with one word: “Onward.”

Middletown finished with six hits, with Ben Nordai, Mitchell Miscevich, Jacob Miller, Brayden Reigle, Eli Webb, and Hartwick each collecting one hit. Michael Swartz and Webb each drove in a run for the Blue Raiders.

Northern Lebanon improved to 22-1 and now advances to the District 3 Semifinals, where the #1 team in the 4A bracket will host the winner of #4 Boiling Springs and #5 Eastern York on Thursday at 4:30 p.m. at Northern Lebanon.
