Howard’s Meet Record, Furmanski and Tirado Golds Give LebCo Strong Opening Night at Lancaster Lebanon League Championships
The Lancaster Lebanon League Track & Field Championship Meet opened Friday night at Hempfield with the kind of energy that makes this one of the biggest weekends on the spring sports calendar.
Some medals were handed out in the 3200m and several field events, while prelims in the sprints and hurdles set up what should be a loaded championship Saturday. For Lebanon County, the first night delivered gold medals, podium finishes, finals qualifiers, and one meet-record performance that immediately became one of the biggest storylines of the weekend.
Cedar Crest senior Kaddel Howard made the loudest statement of the night, winning the Girls 200m prelims in 23.36 to set a new meet record. In doing so, Howard broke the League Championship record she had previously set in 2024, while also running the fastest Girls 200m time in Lancaster Lebanon League history. Howard’s time gives her the top seed going into Saturday’s final, where she will again be pushed by a deep field that includes JP McCaskey sophomore Ella Petrosky, one of the League’s top sprint talents.
Petrosky will enter Saturday as the top seed in the Girls 100m after running 11.81 in Friday’s prelims. The sophomore is no stranger to the big stage, having won State silver in the 100m last year. That sets up a major Day 2 sprint showcase, with Howard holding the top 200m seed and Petrosky leading the 100m field.
Cedar Crest also claimed two gold medals in events that went final. Travis Furmanski, the reigning PIAA Cross Country champion who also medaled in the 3200m at States last year, won the Boys 3200m in 9:23.56. He led a strong Lebanon County performance that also included Annville-Cleona’s Oliver Funck taking 2nd and Cedar Crest’s Zachary Margutplacing 4th. In the field, Cameron Tirado cleared 6’6″ to win the Boys High Jump championship.
Around the meet, several other gold medal winners helped shape the first night. JP McCaskey’s Ruby Garner-Valle won the Girls 3200m in 10:53.85, Ephrata’s Sophia Rivera captured the Girls Discus at 136’8″, Manheim Township’s Emerson Hardy won the Girls Pole Vault at 11’6″, and Elizabethtown’s Jebbeh Ngafua claimed the Girls Triple Jump at 36’10”.
On the boys side, Octorara’s Hector Vergara had a major night, winning the Boys Long Jump at 23’0″ and then coming back to take the top seed in the Boys 200m prelims at 21.66. Octorara’s Mason Prokay won the Boys Javelin with a throw of 200’7″, while Conestoga Valley’s Jonah Richards earned the top seed in the Boys 100m with a 10.73. Ephrata’s Ryder Newlin will be the top seed in the Boys 110m Hurdles after running 14.56, while Manheim Central’s Kylie Mattiace leads the Girls 100m Hurdles field after a 14.58 in prelims.
Lebanon County will have plenty to watch on Saturday. Cedar Crest’s Landen Weaber qualified for both the Boys 100m and 200m finals, Cedar Crest’s Justin Moreno advanced in the Boys 110m Hurdles, and ELCO’s Maddie Nelson moved through to the Girls 100m final.
With finals, relays, and more field events still to come, Saturday at Hempfield should be a showcase for the Lancaster Lebanon League’s best. Fans are encouraged to come out to Landisville and fill the stands. For anyone who cannot make it in person, LebCo Sports Live will be there all day with live coverage of the championship action.
