Bottom of Lineup, Roye Power Vikings Past Garden Spot
Fresh off a big win over Donegal on Monday that gave them full control of Section 3, Northern Lebanon kept the momentum rolling Wednesday with an 11-0 road win over Garden Spot that lasted just five innings.
The Vikings got contributions throughout the lineup, but the bottom third played a major role in the five-inning victory. Keira Palski, Makenzie West, and Mykenah Johnson combined for four of Northern Lebanon’s eight hits, scored four runs, and drove in three as the Vikings improved to 10-3.
Northern Lebanon wasted no time taking control in the 1st. An error got the Vikings started, then Alyssa Shirey drew a walk, Sophia Roye singled down the left field line, West added a single to center, and Ryleigh Hopkins worked a walk as Northern Lebanon pushed across five runs in the opening frame.
The Vikings added two more in the 3rd to stretch the lead. West drew a walk to force in a run, and Hopkins followed with a groundout that brought home another as Northern Lebanon built a 7-0 advantage.
That was more than enough support for Roye, who dominated in the circle. The right-hander fired a one-hit shutout over five innings, striking out 11 and walking two. Garden Spot managed just one hit off Roye, with Kelsey Longacre going 1-for-2 to account for the Spartans’ lone knock.
Roye also helped herself at the plate, finishing with two hits, while West added two more. Hopkins and Johnson each drove in two runs for the Vikings, who stayed aggressive on the bases all afternoon. West stole two bases, and Northern Lebanon finished with five stolen bases overall.
The Vikings also showed patience at the plate, drawing six walks, and they backed Roye with a clean defensive effort. Northern Lebanon did not commit an error, and Johnson led the way defensively with 11 chances.
Garden Spot starter Aubrey Rutt took the loss after allowing five hits and seven runs, two earned, over two innings. Kelsey Longacre followed with three innings of relief.
Northern Lebanon (10-3) will be back in action on Thursday when it hosts Central York.
