Dutchmen Break Loose Late to Beat Pequea Valley for Much Needed Win
After dropping four straight entering the week, Annville-Cleona suddenly has some momentum again.
Coming off a win by forfeit on Monday, the Dutchmen traveled to Pequea Valley on Wednesday and backed up that result with a strong performance on the field, pulling away late for a 15-8 victory. Annville-Cleona finished with 17 hits, erased an early deficit, and used a six-run 7th inning to put the game away.
Annville-Cleona got on the board first in the 1st when Nia Hafey came around to score on an error. Pequea Valley answered quickly in the bottom half, though, stringing together enough offense to take a 4-1 lead on a fielder’s choice off the bat of Audrey Beiler, an RBI single from Calli King, and run-scoring groundouts by Grace Melson and Addy Pacella.
The Dutchmen chipped away in the 2nd, using three singles to climb back into the game. Abigail Evans delivered the hit that tied things at 4-4, helping Annville-Cleona erase the early three-run hole.
Annville-Cleona moved back in front in the 3rd. Temperance Brubaker ripped a double to right field to score a run, and Anna Pacewicz followed with an RBI single down the right field line to give the Dutchmen the lead again.
From there, Brubaker settled in well enough in the circle to help Annville-Cleona stay in control. The right-hander went the distance, allowing nine hits and eight runs, five earned, while striking out seven and walking two. At the plate, she also starred by going 3-for-5 with three runs batted in.
The Dutchmen broke the game open in the 7th, sending six runs across on six hits. Evans doubled home a run, Zoe Miller added an RBI single, Brubaker followed with another run-scoring hit, and Savannah Milian capped the rally with a three-run single that gave Annville-Cleona breathing room.
Annville-Cleona’s offense came from throughout the lineup. Evans, Brubaker, Summer Light, and Miller each had three hits, while Kinslee Phillips added two more. Hafey helped set the table with four walks as the Dutchmen showed patience at the plate and finished with six free passes overall.
The Dutchmen also created pressure on the bases all game long. Miller stole two bases, and Annville-Cleona piled up eight stolen bases in all to keep Pequea Valley on its heels.
For Pequea Valley, King drove in three runs while going 2-for-4. Alanna Lerch led the team with three hits, and Pacella added two more in the loss.
Annville-Cleona (6-5) will be back home on Thursday when it hosts Kutztown.
