Annville-Cleona Opens Section 4 Play with 5-Inning Win Over Columbia

Coming off a road loss to Eastern York on Tuesday, Annville-Cleona returned home Wednesday looking to bounce back in a hurry. The Dutchmen did exactly that, erupting early against Columbia and rolling to a 12-2 win in a game that opened Section 4 play. The uploaded stats sheet shows Annville-Cleona scoring 7 runs in the 1st, 4 more in the 2nd, and finishing the day with 11 hits in the 5-inning victory.

The Dutchmen wasted little time taking control. Annville-Cleona put Columbia in a deep hole with a 7-run 1st inning, then kept the pressure on with 4 more runs in the 2nd to build an 11-1 lead. After Columbia scratched across single runs in the 2nd and 3rd, the Dutchmen added one more in the 5th to close things out.

At the plate, Zac Frentz helped set the tone by going 2-3 with 2 runs scored, a walk, and 2 stolen bases. Tanner Stokesscored twice and drove in 2 runs, while Traian Dompier finished 2-4 with 2 runs scored, an RBI, a walk, and a stolen base. Alex Shaffer also had a big day, going 2-2 with 2 runs scored, 2 RBI, and 2 walks. Max Ortwein added 2 hits, including a double, and drove in a run as the Dutchmen’s lineup kept traffic on the bases all afternoon. Annville-Cleona also stole 6 bases as a team.

On the mound, John Ditzler gave the Dutchmen a clean start, working 2 scoreless innings while allowing just 1 hit and 1 walk. Shaffer handled the final 3 innings and gave up 2 runs, 1 earned, as Annville-Cleona finished off the win. Defensively, the Dutchmen played a clean game behind their pitchers and did not commit an error.

For Columbia, Cameron McClair, Dougie Rhoads, Peyton Gilbert, and Luke Rupp each recorded a hit. Rupp and Nick Boyer drove in the Tide’s 2 runs. Columbia got 3 innings of solid relief work from Boyer after Annville-Cleona’s early surge, but the damage from the opening innings proved too much to overcome.

Annville-Cleona, now 2-1, will go back on the road Monday when it faces Pequea Valley.
