Miller, Dutchmen dominate Hanover in 4-inning season opener

Annville-Cleona could not have asked for a much better start to the season.

The Dutchmen opened 2026 with a 17-0 win over Hanover on Thursday, taking control early and ending the game in 4 innings behind a big offensive performance and a dominant outing in the circle from junior Zoe Miller.

Annville-Cleona got on the board in the 1st and never slowed down. The Dutchmen scored 4 runs in the opening inning, added 5 more in the 3rd, and then broke it wide open with 8 runs in the 4th.

The early offense came from several spots in the lineup. Peyton Elder, a rising contributor at catcher, doubled in the 1st, while Miller added a single and Peyton Grumbine brought in a run on a groundout. A Hanover error also helped Annville-Cleona build its first lead.

From there, the Dutchmen kept the pressure on with timely hitting, patient at-bats, and aggressive baserunning.

Elder and Anna Pacewicz both finished with 3 RBIs to lead the offense. Senior center fielder Abigail Evans, one of Annville-Cleona’s key returners, went 2-for-4 with a double, 2 RBIs, and 2 stolen bases. Nia Hafey added a triple, 2 RBIs, and a walk, while Jayde Cruz also swiped 2 bases.

The Dutchmen also showed strong plate discipline, drawing 8 walks in the win. Senior infielder Summer Light, another key returner, worked 2 of those walks, while Temperence Brubaker and Grumbine also reached twice on walks.

In the circle, Miller was in control from the start. The junior pitcher threw 4 no-hit innings, struck out 11, and did not allow Hanover to score as Annville-Cleona closed out the season opener in dominant fashion.

With the win, Annville-Cleona starts the season 1-0 and will head to Tulpehocken on Saturday.
