On Saturday, the Mid Penn field hockey season kicked off with a thrilling matchup between perennial powerhouses Palmyra and Mechanicsburg. Both teams have claimed multiple district and state championships over the past decade, with Mechanicsburg notably defeating Palmyra in the 2022 2A state championship. Since 2024, the schedule has limited these rivals to one annual meeting, with Mechanicsburg edging Palmyra 3-2 in last year’s opener. This time, Palmyra sought to even the score and secured a hard-fought 2-1 victory.
The scoring began in the second quarter when Palmyra’s sophomore forward Maddie Stahl skillfully navigated through defenders and scored from the top of the circle. Palmyra’s defense, led by senior captains Bree Augenbaugh and AJ Walker, alongside Penn State commit Leigha Kane, controlled the first half, limiting Mechanicsburg’s opportunities. However, with under five minutes left in the half, Mechanicsburg capitalized on one of their three penalty corners, as junior Syracuse commit Liberty Olivetti redirected a drive to tie the game 1-1 at halftime.
Palmyra regained the lead early in the third quarter when sophomore forward Elle Detweiler scored off an assist from Kane during a scramble in front of the cage. Despite several chances to extend their lead, Palmyra was denied by Mechanicsburg’s defense, which also generated multiple penalty corners to pressure the Cougars. The final five minutes were intense, with Mechanicsburg pushing for an equalizer, prompting Palmyra coach Kent Harshman to call a timeout with under three minutes remaining.
Post-timeout, Palmyra executed a masterful display of clock management, moving the ball side-to-side at midfield to frustrate Mechanicsburg’s pursuit, reminiscent of Dean Smith’s “four corners” strategy. This tactical play ran the clock down to under a minute, and a final Mechanicsburg attack was thwarted by Kane, securing Palmyra’s victory over their 3A rival.
Palmyra will return to action on September 2nd at Northern York.
