Over the weekend, Track & Field teams from across Central Pennsylvania sent their best athletes to the PIAA District 3 Championships, held at Shippensburg University. Among the athletes who qualified were those from the six LebCo programs.
Friday’s severe weather changed plans, cut short prelims, and shifted several events to a modified schedule on Friday. While this caused a disruption to the meet, the athletes persevered and returned on Saturday, putting forth tremendous efforts.
Among the biggest performances was that of the Palmyra Boys squad. Led by Tyler Burgess’s gold medal-winning performances in the 110m High Hurdles & 300m IM Hurdles, the Cougars clinched their first Team Title since 1999. In addition to his hurdle golds, Burgess joined Jacob Burgess, Travis McDannell, & Landon Weldon to win the 4x100m. However, that wasn’t the only gold brought home to 17078, as Jaxton Barger won the Pole Vault, carrying on the legacy of accomplished high-flying acrobats representing the black and orange.
In 2024, Burgess, the defending State hurdles champion, set the District 3 record in the 300m IM Hurdles. In Friday’s prelims, Burgess added his name to the record books when he broke the 110m High Hurdles record by running 13.55 to break the longest-standing meet record.
Burgess was not the only LebCo athlete to set a meet record this weekend. Cedar Crest’s Kaddel Howard, who again claimed 1st place in the 400m, broke her own mark by setting a new standard of 53.95. This followed her 53.97, which was also faster than her previous record of 54.68 from 2023.
Additionally, the Annville-Cleona Girls 4x100m team of Sophia Caporaletti, Kendall Cooper, Miracle Hershey, & Jada Morales ran a 48.63 to win the AA title. Their time eclipsed the previous meet record of 49.07, which had stood since 2008. The Dutchmen then returned later in the meet to take gold in the 4x400m. In addition to this, Cooper took silver in both the 100m & 200m.
While the focus could be on the record-setting performances, there were also other District Championships claimed by LebCo athletes. Among them was the Cedar Crest Girls 4x800m relay consisting of Audrey Fugate, Hayden Wamsher, Emma Pavlesich, & Eliana Schneider, whose 9:25.43 to start the day Saturday sent them to the top of the podium. The Annville-Cleona Boys 4x800m made the climb a short time later when they ran 8:08.55 to give gold to Landon Hostetter, Matt Clemson, Dominic Basselgia, & David Moran. Hostetter then added individual gold when he won the 3200m, while Moran defended his 800m championship. Funck added silver in the 1600m. Hostetter finished 4th in the 1600m, with his time qualifying him for States.
Beyond the 4x800m, Mackenzie Stellmach, who ran on Annville’s 4x800m as they finished 2nd, clocked 11:44:11 to take gold in the 3200m. Stellmach’s 4x800m team of Lucy Stellmach, Addison Sanchez, & Kya Missimer. Cedar Crest’s Travis Furmanski was the second runner to cross the line in the AAA Boys, taking silver with an impressive time of 9:22.36.
In the throws, LebCo’s athletes shined as well. In Friday’s Girls Javelin, Cedar Crest’s Schneider & Palmyra’s Sofie Price claimed silver and gold, respectively. Schneider then added a 5th place medal in Saturday’s High Jump. Additionally, Annville-Cleona’s Bryson Fogelsanger won silver in the Boys AA Javelin. Cedar Crest’s Alex Kissinger took 8th in the Discus, with his top throw of 153’11” meeting the qualifying standard for States.
While the jumps were headlined with Barger’s gold, the medal count did not stop there for LebCo athletes. On Saturday, ELCO’s Makenna Haas took silver in the Triple Jump after taking 6th in Friday’s Long Jump. Palmyra’s Jacob Burgess, who also finished 6th in the 100m, took bronze in the Long Jump. Cedar Crest’s Cameron Tirado will join the LebCo contingent at States after climbing to 6’3” in the High Jump to take 5th place.
Update: Following a scratch by another athlete, Palmyra’s Maddy Waldron has accepted the invite to compete in the 200m after finishing 6th in Saturday’s race.
The 2025 Track & Field season will conclude next weekend at Shippensburg. We wish all of our LebCo athletes the best.
