On Friday evening, the first events of the 2024 Lancaster Lebanon League Track & Field Championship took place at Hempfield High School in less than ideal conditions. Despite the weather, athletes put up some great performances, with athletes from LebCo accounting for a total of nine medals. The medal haul included two gold medals. Additionally, two school records were broken, and four athletes earned their spots in the finals after finishing in the top eight in their preliminary races.
In the Girls’ Triple Jump, a pair of LebCo athletes combined for a 1-2 finish. Lebanon’s Zariyah Whigham (Sr.) repeated as the League Champion with the winning jump of 38’2.25″. ELCO’s Makenna Haas (Jr.) finished the event with a 37’6.5″, earning her a silver medal with a mark that broke her own school record.
The other gold medal-winning performance came courtesy of Cedar Crest’s Dylan Groff. The junior entered this meet as the #2 seed in the Javelin. For much of the event, it looked like the seedings would play out. However, on Groff’s final throw, he launched the spear 180’6″ to win the event by over 9′. Groff was not the only medal winner in the Jav, as Northern Lebanon’s Tanner Feagley (Sr.) had a top throw of 164’6″, good enough for 4th place.
In both 3200m races, a LebCo athlete medaled. In the girls’ race, Annville’s Mackenzie Stellmach (So.) took 5th with a time of 11:24.65. On the boys’ side, Northern Lebanon’s Tyler Shunk (Sr.) placed 8th with a time of 9:40.01. Shunk’s time broke his previous school record that had been set at the LebCo Meet by nearly eight full seconds.
The High Jump also witnessed two LebCo medals being won, this time by members of the same family. Cameron Tirado (So.) cleared 6’0″ to take 5th place, while Leo Tirado (Sr.) won a 6th place medal when he cleared 5’8″. It is worth noting that the wet conditions drove down the overall performances in this event.
In one other event that was contested for a medal on Friday, Cedar Crest’s Nachali Manon Aquino (So.) medaled in the Discus with a throw of 98’5″.
In preliminary action, there were four athletes who earned their lanes in Saturday’s Finals. In the Girls’ 200m, Cedar Crest’s Kaddel Howard laid down a 25.02 to claim the top seed, while Annville-Cleona’s Kendall Cooper goes into the Finals as the #4 seed. Lebanon’s Jalik Hill will enter the Finals of the Boys’ 200m as the #4 seed. In the Boys’ 110m High Hurdles, Cedar Crest’s Reed Fretz earned his spot in the medal round after finishing the prelims in 6th place. Jeremiah Santiago of Cedar Crest very narrowly missed out on qualifying for the 100m and 200m Finals, which could light a fire for him in the 4x100m.
Below are the results for every LebCo athlete. Medal winners are highlighted in this color. Athletes advancing to the Finals are highlighted in this color. The full results from the meet are linked at the bottom.
