Track & Field: Cedar Crest Boys Claim First L-L League Title Since 2014 as LebCo Athletes Shine in Rainy Championship Meet

Clouds hung over Hempfield High School for most of Saturday’s Lancaster Lebanon League Track & Field Championship Meet, with cool temperatures and steady rain shaping much of the day’s action in Landisville.

The weather played a role throughout the meet, including in the girls 4x100m Relay, where JP McCaskey appeared to be in position to contend for gold before dropping the final exchange. Conestoga Valley went on to win the event, while McCaskey finished 11th. The skies remained gray until the final event of the day, when the meet closed out after a long and challenging championship Saturday.

For Lebanon County, the day was highlighted by a championship performance from the Cedar Crest boys, who captured the Lancaster Lebanon League team title for the first time since 2014. The Falcons were led by gold medals from Landen Weaber, Travis Furmanski, Cameron Tirado, and the 4x100m Relay team, while their depth across the track and field events helped secure the overall title.

Overall, Lebanon County athletes and relays combined for 43 medal-winning finishes, including 10 gold medals, across the two-day championship meet.

On the girls side, JP McCaskey continued its run at the top of the league, winning its 6th straight Lancaster Lebanon League Championship. The Red Tornado received individual gold from Ella Petrosky, Vivian Salerno, Carolynn Main, Ruby Garner-Valle, and the 4x800m Relay, along with a series of medal-winning performances that helped them hold off Cedar Crest.

Girls Recap

Cedar Crest’s girls had several major highlights, led by another dominant performance from Kaddel Howard. The senior won both the 200m and 400m, taking the 200m in 23.74 and the 400m in 53.49. The margins were just as impressive as the times, as Howard won the 200m by 1.69 seconds over Conestoga Valley’s Brylee Miller, then came back to win the 400m by 4.46 seconds over Elizabethtown’s Lauren Heinz.

That came one day after Howard ran 23.36 in Friday’s 200m prelims, breaking the meet record she had previously set in 2024. The time also stands as the fastest 200m ever run in Lancaster Lebanon League history.

The Falcons also received a massive all-around performance from Eliana Schneider, who won the High Jump at 5’4″ and later added the Javelin title with a throw of 142’9″. In between those gold medals, Schneider delivered one of the best races of the day in the 800m, chasing JP McCaskey’s Vivian Salerno the entire way before finishing 2nd in 2:13.49. Salerno won the race in 2:11.56, but Schneider’s runner-up finish gave Cedar Crest another huge scoring effort in what became one of the meet’s most competitive races.

In the throws, Mikayla Fripps placed 3rd in the Discus and 6th in the Shot Put, while Mikalyn Weaber placed 4th in the Shot Put. Jesslyn Risser added a 6th-place medal in the Pole Vault, and the Cedar Crest 4x800m Relay team placed 8th.

Lebanon also picked up key medals in the jumps, where Cayleigh Shaak placed 5th in the Long Jump and 7th in the Triple Jump. ELCO’s Maddie Nelson placed 5th in the 100m and 5th in the 300m Hurdles, while teammate Keirra Shollplaced 8th in the Triple Jump. Annville-Cleona’s 4x800m Relay team earned bronze, and Anabella Pulaski placed 6th in the Javelin.

Beyond the Lebanon County results, the girls meet again showed the depth of the Lancaster Lebanon League. McCaskey’s team strength, Howard’s historic sprinting, Schneider’s multi-event excellence, Salerno’s 800m victory, and strong performances from athletes at Manheim Central, Conestoga Valley, Ephrata, Garden Spot, Hempfield, and others made for a championship meet loaded with district-level talent.

Boys Recap

The Cedar Crest boys delivered a complete championship effort, combining star power with depth throughout the meet.

Landen Weaber opened the Falcons’ gold-medal push by winning the 100m in 10.81 before placing 2nd in the 200m in 22.35. Cedar Crest also won the 4x100m Relay in 42.51, giving the Falcons another key sprint victory.

In the distance events, Travis Furmanski delivered a massive double, winning the 1600m in 4:13.27 and the 3200m in 9:23.56. His 1600m victory came after a terrific battle with Annville-Cleona’s Oliver Funck, as the two Lebanon County standouts ran together near the front throughout the race before Furmanski pulled away late. Funck finished 2nd in 4:17.03, giving Lebanon County a 1-2 finish in one of the meet’s premier distance races.

The same two athletes came back to finish 1-2 in the 3200m as well, with Furmanski winning in 9:23.56 and Funckplacing 2nd in 9:29.42. Zachary Margut also came through with important points for Cedar Crest, placing 5th in the 1600m and 4th in the 3200m.

Cameron Tirado added another gold for Cedar Crest in the High Jump, clearing 6’6″, while Max Fleischer earned medals in both the Triple Jump and Javelin, placing 3rd in each event. Andy Appiah placed 5th in the Long Jump, and Justin Moreno placed 4th in the 110m Hurdles.

Annville-Cleona had a strong championship day as well, led by David Moran, who won the 800m in 1:55.41 after placing 2nd in the 400m in 49.33. In the throws, sophomore Dominic Wentling placed 2nd in the Discus and 3rd in the Shot Put, giving the Dutchmen another major source of points.

Lebanon was led by Eddie Ferrer, who placed 6th in the Triple Jump, while Northern Lebanon’s Luke Hentz placed 7th in the 800m. ELCO’s 4x800m Relay also medaled with an 8th-place finish.

Across the league, the boys meet featured high-end performances in every event area. Octorara’s Hector Vergara, Ephrata’s Ryder Newlin, Hempfield’s Wilder Long, Manheim Township’s distance and relay depth, and JP McCaskey’s middle-distance strength helped make the boys championship one of the deepest league meets of the season.
