Game of the Week
Cedar Crest (3-1) @ Wilson (3-1)
The scenario presented by this game appears similar to last year’s game. Both teams come into the game with similarrecords and no shortage of talent. Although, Wilson has historically dominated this matchup. The games have been hard-fought, but Wilson consistently finds a way to come out on top. This year could be different if Wilson makes the mistake of being overconfident because this matchup has all the ingredients of a trap game for the Bulldogs.
The offensive statistics seem to give the advantage to Wilson. The Bulldogs are an extremely balanced offensive team, gaining 750 yards rushing and 785 yards passing, averaging 383 yards per game. The Falcons have also had their share of success offensively, with 898 yards on the ground and 419 passing, averaging 329 yards per game. Given the balance of Wilson’s offense, they have somewhat of an advantage in this category.
Defensively, the statistics of both teams are similar. Wilson has given up only 315 yards on the ground but yielded 689 yards passing for an average of 251 yards per game. If Wilson has an Achilles heel, it’s the fact that they have a tendencyto give up long passing plays to their opponents. In their only loss to Nazareth, they gave up 4 long TD passes of 52, 62, 35, and 42 yards, and those long TD passes became the difference in the game. Cedar Crest has given up 437 yards rushing and 609 yards passing. Much of the Falcon’s passing yards given up were the result of having sizable leads early against 3 of their opponents and forcing them to pass in an effort to catch up on the scoreboard. On the basis of Wilson’s tendency to give up extended passing plays, the advantage goes to the Falcon defense.
Overall, the history of this matchup goes in favor of Wilson, along with their size and talent. The Falcons must bring their best physical game to this contest, at the same time eliminating the turnovers that plagued them in their only loss to Warwick. If the Falcons are able to accomplish this type of effort, the game could turn out to be a significant upset and one of the biggest upsets in Falcon history.
