On Saturday, LebCo’s six junior high Track & Field programs competed in their version of the Lebanon County Championships, much like their high school counterparts had done the previous evening. Unlike the high school version of the event, the weather was not as nice, with temperatures in the fifties and rain showers causing damp conditions. Despite the challenging conditions, the competition at Palmyra’s Buck Swank Stadium was intense.
Defending their home turf, Palmyra won the Girls Team Championship. The Cougars were led by Maya Skipper, who won the 100m (13.42) and 200m (27.46), edging out teammate Emily Bearinger, the 2nd place finisher in both races. Maddie Stahl added a victory in the 800m (2:44.7), and Charlotte Duncan won the 100m Hurdles (19.91), which were added to the meet this year. Palmyra also added 1st place finishes in the 4x100m and 4x400m relays.
Outside of the team competition, there were several other top performances. Cedar Crest’s Mikayla Fripps won both the Shot Put (34’2″) and Discus (68’2″). Annville-Cleona had the jumps under control, with Georgia Sellers winning the Long Jump (14’3″) and Kora Wolfe taking the High Jump (4’8″). Annville’s Lucy Stellmach won the 1600m (5:57.0) before leading the Dutchmen to a victory in the 4x800m.
On the Boys’ side, Cedar Crest outlasted a strong challenge from ELCO to take the Team Championship. The Falcons were again led by 8th grader Jordan Anderson, who repeated as the County Champ in the 100m (12.33) and 200m (24.55). In a testament to their depth, teammate Andrew Appiah finished 2nd in both short sprints. Cedar Crest was also the top finishers in the 4x100m and 4x400m relay races.
Overall, the Boys’ competition was very well spread out, with no one team dominating. Dominic Wentling, representing Annville-Cleona, was the king of the throws, winning the Discus (156’6″) by nearly thirty feet and then marking 39’6″ in the Shot Put to narrowly defeat ELCO’s Kayden Wagner (38’4″). ELCO had a pair of winners on the track, with Cru Frederick taking the 800m (2:16.8) and Max Frederick winning the 1600m (4:56.7). The two Raiders also paired up for a win in the 4x800m (9:38). Northern Lebanon’s winners included Bryant Baquerizo in the 110m High Hurdles (18.25) and Johnny Hilton in the High Jump (5’8″). Lebanon took the top spot in the Long Jump, with Yassine Hakam‘s leap of 16’11.5″.
In addition to the hurdles, the Turbo Jav , a safer version of one of the high school throwing staples, was also new to the meet this year (pictured below). Northern Lebanon’s Landon Graby‘s throw of 95’0″ won the event. Lebanon’s Tyler Reigle also had a nice throw of 93’10” to take silver.
One final note. The Lebanon County Junior High Track & Field Championship Meet offers an early look at who may be arriving soon at the high school level. As an example, last year, Palmyra’s Maddy Waldron and Annville-Cleona’s Jada Morales showed off their sprint speed and are using that skill to set records at the high school level this year. Who are the next stars?
