On Saturday, athletes from the six county schools met at Cedar Crest High School for the annual Lebanon County Boys Tennis Championships.
In the #1 Singles, Palmyra’s Aidan Mahaffey defeated Cedar Crest’s Viseth Meng (6-2, 6-0) in the Finals. Mahaffey, the two-time State Doubles Champion, got past Travis Hostetter of Annville-Cleona with a clean 6-0, 6-0 victory in the Semifinals.
The #2 Singles witnessed a win by the other half of the Mahaffey Duo “ATM.” Tyler Mahaffey won 6-2, 6-1 over Cedar Crest’s Joe Shkreli. Mahaffey defeated ELCO’s Brett Wenger in a Semifinal matchup (6-0, 6-0). For the sophomore Wenger, it was the second straight day that he was matched up against a State Champion, having played Lancaster Country Day’s Michael Georgelis on Friday.
The Finals for #1 Doubles offered one of the best matches of the day. Cedar Crest’s Ben Sheffield and Nate Meng engaged in a fierce battle against Palmyra’s Caleb Sitler and Jacob Cote. The match went down to the wire, with the Falcons ultimately clinching victory with a score of 6-3, 2-6, 10-3.
The #2 Doubles was just as, if not more exciting, with Palmyra’s Casey Heisey and Andrew Bauer outlasting the pair from Cedar Crest, Isaac Wolfe and Ethan Rader, over three sets. Heisey/Sitler dropped the first set but rallied to win the match. The scores of the sets were 3-6, 7-5, 10-5.
With three first golds and a second-place finish, Palmyra High School was crowned the Lebanon County Team Champions. For context on Palmyra’s tradition of excellence, it is worth noting that in every tournament played since 2018, Palmyra has reigned as either the sole champion or co-champions.
