LebCo Varsity Ice Hockey Update: February 2

Insight provided by TJ Fasnacht (LebCoSports Hockey Contributor)

The three county programs compete as club teams in the Central Pennsylvania Interscholastic Hockey League (CPIHL).  Due to the club status of these organization, the teams have the ability to pull from areas that would not otherwise fall within their school district.

CPIHL All-Star Game

On Wednesday, January 25th, the CPIHL held its annual All-Star game at York Ice.  On the National Team, there were five players that represent Lebanon County’s ice hockey programs. The five selections were: Benjamin Bell (Palmyra), Kevin Dromgoole (Palmyra), Mason Henne (Cedar Crest), Thayne Kahl (Cedar Crest), Zander Meily (Annville-Cleona). Serving as the two assistant coaches for the National Team were Annville coaches Brian Shanahan and Tony Leone.

The game itself offered some exciting action, including some stellar performances by Lebanon County’s athletes.  Thayne Kahl assisted on the first goal of the game to give the National a 1-0 lead in the first period.  A minute later, Zander Meily set-up another goal to give them a 2-0 lead.  The American team made it a one-goal game in the second period until Mason Henne assisted on the National team’s third goal of the evening.  The National team held on for a 4-3 win, with our local skaters playing a role in three of the four goals.

Season Update: As with most of the season, this Annville squad fights hard, but is unable to match the firepower of their opponents in most games. However, the game against Pottsville was a different story when they put the puck in the net eight times. In that game, Jonathon Breinich notched a hat trick, with Zander Meily and Dylan Musser each scoring twice.  On the season, it has been Meily leading the offense with his 12 goals and 2 assists.  Breinich is second on the team with 7 goals and 5 assists, despite only being available in twelve of AC’s sixteen games.  Musser is second on the team in points having tallied 5 goals and seven assists.  With one game remaining, the Dutchmen will look to finish out this year on a high note in order to build on the foundation for next season.

    • 1/23: Central Dauphin 13, Cedar Crest 3
    • 1/30: Cedar Crest 12, E-Town/Middletown 2

Season Update: The Falcons have been making a steady climb up in the standings over the course of the past month as the playoffs approach.  Once on the bubble, this unit has been hot and is now solidly in position to qualify for the postseason.  Outside of a loss to undefeated Central Dauphin, most things seem to be going right for Cedar Crest. Anthony Long leads the team with 15 goals, along with 13 assists, 7 of which have come over the past six games. Ben Feeman has 14 goals and in doing so he has registered two hat tricks and another two-goal performance during the month of January.  Speaking of assists, Keygan Paquette continues to add to his team leading 18, but has added 7 goals of his own over the past four games (8 on the season).  Along with Paquette, Bryant Alspaugh rung up a hat trick in their most recent game to give him 12 goals to go with 16 assists on the season. Thayne Kahl is 4th on the team with 21 points on 8 goals and 13 assists. Goalie Thomas Winsett continues to be tremendous, the Central Dauphin game notwithstanding.  Removing that game, Winsett has racked up a .951 save percentage on the 185 shots he has faced in five of the last six game. As a result of this team’s efforts, their season will continue.

       Palmyra Cougars Ice Hockey

Bears Division of the CPIHL

Current Record: 7-10-0-1; 7th place

Season Goals by Period: 1st – 19 / 2nd – 28 / 3rd – 30 / Total – 78

    • 1/27: Palmyra 5, E-Town/Middletown 2
    • 2/1: Palmyra 10, Cumberland Valley 6

Season Update:The Palmyra Cougars have won five of their last six, including their last four, each in decisive fashion.  For most of the season, this group seemed like it was going to finish in the bottom tier of the standings, but their efforts of late have put them on a path to finish in 7th place (one place shy of the playoffs). On the season, Johnny Eldridge (18 goals, 12 assists) and Noah Poleshuk (15 goals, 13 assists) have been the engines that have made this team go. However, it was not just these two young men who have been contributing, as five additional Cougars have tallied at least five goals. This all culminated with a 10-goal explosion last night, in what was their final game of the season.
