Padovani Leads Vikings to Third at Meadia Heights

With only two Lancaster-Lebanon League Section 3 golf matches remaining entering Tuesday, Lampeter-Strasburg had already created plenty of separation at the top of the standings.

The Pioneers arrived at their home course, Meadia Heights Golf Club, with a perfect 20-0 record after sweeping each of the first four section matches. Donegal entered second at 15-5, followed by Northern Lebanon at 11-9. ELCO stood at 8-12, Octorara at 6-14, and Lebanon at 0-20.

Tuesday did little to change the picture at the top.

L-S posted a four-player score of 328 to earn its fifth consecutive sweep and improve to a perfect 25-0. Donegal finished second at 360, while Northern Lebanon was just three strokes back in third with a 363.

Octorara followed at 376 and ELCO finished at 383. Lebanon had three golfers in the field and therefore did not record a team score.

For Northern Lebanon, junior Collin Padovani delivered one of the best rounds of the day.

Padovani fired an 80 to tie L-S’s Gabe Trout for second overall, finishing just one stroke behind medalist Reid Shultz, who led the Pioneers with a 79.

Freshman Jacob Anspach provided Northern Lebanon’s next counting score with an 89, while sophomore Ashton Yeager shot 91. Christian Rizzo completed the Vikings’ four-player total with a 103.

The third-place finish gave Northern Lebanon three more head-to-head victories, moving the Vikings to 14-11 with one Section 3 match remaining.

ELCO entered Tuesday coming off its best section finish of the season, a third-place performance in the weather-shortened match at Lebanon Country Club.

Senior James Dolan again led the Raiders, this time with a 91. Owen Halpin followed with a 95, while Jackson Smeltzer shot 96 and Brady Habecker added a 101 to complete ELCO’s 383.

The fifth-place finish moved the Raiders to 9-16 in Section 3 competition.

Lebanon again competed with three golfers. Trinity Leeper led the Cedars with a 116, followed by Noah Cotto at 117 and Landyn Strickler at 127.

At the front of the field, L-S once again demonstrated the depth that has allowed it to control Section 3 from the opening match.

Shultz earned medalist honors with his 79, while Trout was one stroke back at 80. Colt Gibson added an 84 and Cooper Hillen shot 85, giving the Pioneers four of the day’s strongest rounds and another five victories.

Donegal finished second behind an 88 from Ryan Smeltz, with Zane Gardner at 90 and Tyler Bernhardt and John Usner each shooting 91.

With five section matches complete, L-S remains perfect at 25-0. Donegal sits second at 19-6, followed by Northern Lebanon at 14-11. ELCO is 9-16, Octorara stands at 8-17, and Lebanon is 0-25.

That leaves one final opportunity for the Section 3 teams to improve their positions.

The section schedule concludes next Wednesday at Moccasin Run Golf Club.
