Allwein Brothers Lead A-C to Nine Hole Victory

The weather that disrupted golf across the region Wednesday didn’t spare the Lancaster-Lebanon League Section 4 field.

Darkening skies and threatening weather forced the match at Annville-Cleona’s home course, Lebanon Country Club, to be shortened to nine holes. For the Dutchmen, however, the abbreviated afternoon brought a return to familiar territory.

A-C regained their position as Section 4’s top team with a team finish that led the field.

The Dutchmen posted a four-player score of 161 (+17), seven strokes better than Pequea Valley’s 168. Lancaster Catholic finished third at 171, followed by Lancaster Country Day at 195 and Lancaster Mennonite at 204.

The victory came with sophomore Benjamin Allwein back in the lineup after missing last week’s match at Conestoga Country Club while competing in another tournament.

Without Allwein last week, the young Dutchmen still managed to finish second and stay near the top of the Section 4 standings. With him back Wednesday, A-C regained the top spot.

Allwein shot an even-par 36, tying Pequea Valley’s Chase Dizel and Lancaster Catholic’s Ben Tomlinson for medalist honors.

Right behind him was his younger brother.

Freshman Jefferson Allwein followed with a 39 to finish fourth overall, continuing an impressive start to his high school career. Allwein entered Wednesday coming off a 76 at Conestoga, where he tied for second overall while filling the top spot in A-C’s lineup. That performance also earned him a nomination in the current LebCo Athlete of the Week voting.

The Dutchmen continued to get contributions throughout their young lineup.

Sophomore Will Kerwin shot a 42 to finish eighth overall, while freshman Jameson Rabena and senior Aidan Lezoneach carded 44s. One of those rounds served as A-C’s fourth counting score, joining the Allwein brothers and Kerwin to produce the winning 161.

Freshman Trey Schrefler added a 47.

The result gave Annville-Cleona four more head-to-head victories and moved the Dutchmen to 11-1 through the first three Section 4 matches.

Lancaster Catholic, which won last week’s match at Conestoga, finished third Wednesday and now sits at 9-3. Pequea Valley’s runner-up finish moved the Braves to 8-4, keeping both programs within range of A-C as the section schedule moves forward.

But Wednesday belonged to the Dutchmen.

After proving they could remain competitive without their top golfer last week, A-C welcomed Benjamin Allwein back and put three golfers inside the top eight, with Jefferson Allwein continuing to emerge as another major piece of the lineup.

Even with the weather limiting the field to nine holes, it was enough for the Dutchmen to reclaim the top spot.
