Northern Lebanon Makes History, Defeats East Pennsboro For First District 3 Baseball Championship

On Monday, May 25th, the Northern Lebanon baseball team traveled to Penn Medicine Park, home of the Lancaster Stormers, to take on East Pennsboro in the District 3 Class 4A Championship. For the Vikings, the matchup offered a chance to make history by winning the program’s first-ever District 3 Championship. Standing in their way was a Panthers team that had won the previous four District 3 Championships.

With Adrian Gonzalez on the mound, Northern Lebanon wasted little time setting the tone. Gonzalez opened the game with a quick 1st inning that included his first strikeout of the day. In the bottom half, Andrew Via started the Vikings’ offense with a single before Landon Copenhaver followed with another single. Owen Fahringer then worked a walk to load the bases, giving Northern Lebanon an early chance to strike.

Gonzalez made sure the opportunity did not go to waste, ripping a double that scored two runs and gave the Vikings a 2-0 lead. Connor Stoltz kept the inning going with an RBI single, pushing the lead to 3-0 before East Pennsboro was able to stop the early damage.

East Pennsboro answered in the 2nd, as Ryan Seibert doubled and later scored when Kade Pearson delivered an RBI single to cut the deficit to 3-1. Brock Shaffer then drew a walk, putting more pressure on Gonzalez with the Panthers trying to climb back into the game. However, Gonzalez settled in and recorded a key strikeout to end the inning and limit the damage.

Northern Lebanon threatened again in the bottom of the 2nd after Blake Burdick opened the inning with a single. Ryan Clemmer then reached on a bunt that resulted in Burdick being tagged out at 2nd. Via followed with his second hit of the game to move Clemmer into scoring position, but the Vikings were unable to add on as the score remained 3-1.

After Gonzalez worked through a quick 3rd inning that included another strikeout, Northern Lebanon once again had a chance to extend the lead. Stoltz and Christian Anspach each drew walks to start the bottom of the 3rd, but East Pennsboro escaped without allowing a run.

The Vikings finally broke through again in the 4th. Clemmer led off with a single before Via continued his red-hot day with a double, giving him his third hit and putting runners on 2nd and 3rd. Copenhaver followed with a sacrifice fly to score Clemmer and make it 4-1.

After Fahringer drew another walk, Gonzalez kept the pressure on with an RBI single that pushed the lead to 5-1. East Pennsboro was able to get out of the inning, but with just a few innings left, the Panthers were running out of chances against a locked-in Gonzalez.

In the 5th, Gonzalez continued his strong outing with another strikeout. East Pennsboro did manage two singles in the inning, but Gonzalez again answered by getting out of trouble and keeping the Panthers from building any momentum.

Gonzalez added another strikeout in the 6th before Northern Lebanon gave him more breathing room in the bottom half. Via started the inning with a walk to continue his outstanding day, and Copenhaver followed with a single. Both runners then stole bases, setting up another scoring chance for the Vikings.

Once again, Gonzalez delivered the big hit, lining a single that scored two runs and stretched the Northern Lebanon lead to 7-1. It capped off a massive day at the plate for Gonzalez, who drove in five runs on three hits, including a 1st-inning double and RBI singles in the 4th and 6th.

From there, East Pennsboro came to the plate one final time with the Vikings just three outs away from history. Gonzalez finished the job, closing out a complete-game effort as Northern Lebanon secured a 7-1 victory and captured the first District 3 Baseball Championship in program history.

Gonzalez earned the win after allowing one run on four hits over seven innings while striking out seven and walking two. Following the championship victory, Gonzalez is now 11-0 on the season with a 0.66 ERA. At the plate, he is batting .384 with 23 RBI, adding even more weight to a championship performance in which he controlled the game both on the mound and in the batter’s box.

Behind Gonzalez, the Vikings were sharp defensively, turning two double plays and finishing the game without committing an error. Stoltz helped anchor that defensive effort, making a team-high seven plays.

Northern Lebanon finished with 11 hits, led by three-hit games from Via and Gonzalez. Copenhaver also added two hits, while the Vikings continued to put pressure on East Pennsboro throughout the game.

The Panthers, who also played error-free defense and turned one double play, were led offensively by hits from Shaffer, Anson Towsey, Seibert, and Pearson.

With the victory, Northern Lebanon’s historic run will now continue into the PIAA State Playoffs.

Northern Lebanon will also look to make it a District 3 sweep on Tuesday, as the softball team will take on Kennard-Dale in the District 3 Class 4A Championship at Millersville University.
