Records, Gold Medals, & State Berths Highlight Lebanon County’s District 3 Championship Weekend

The District 3 Track & Field Championships took place at Shippensburg on Friday and Saturday, with a chance for many of our local athletes to win medals and to battle for a chance to compete at the PIAA State Championship Meet next weekend in the same location.

As the weather warmed up over Central Pennsylvania, the action heated up with it. By the end of the weekend, Lebanon County athletes and relays had combined for 39 medal-winning performances.

Across both classifications, the top 8 finishers in each event earned District 3 medals. In Class AAA, the top 5 finishers in each event qualified for States, with athletes placing as high as 8th also eligible to advance if they hit the state qualifying standard. In Class AA, the top 2 finishers in each event advanced, with state qualifying standards also creating additional paths where applicable.

Few performances anywhere in Pennsylvania this season could match what Cedar Crest senior Kaddel Howard did in the Class AAA 400m. Howard won the event in 51.48, the fastest girls 400m ever run in Pennsylvania history. The time does not qualify as a PIAA State record because that mark would need to be set at the State Championship Meet, but with Howard headed back to Shippensburg next weekend, stay tuned.

The Cedar Crest senior also added gold in the Class AAA 200m, winning in 23.48 after setting the District 3 record in prelims with a 23.42.

In the field, Cedar Crest senior Eliana Schneider put together her own historic weekend. Schneider won the Class AAA High Jump at 5’5″ and broke the District 3 record in the Javelin with a throw of 154’1″. She also placed 2nd in the 800m, running 2:13.65 behind JP McCaskey sophomore Vivian Salerno, who won in 2:11.20.

That 800m matchup has quickly become one of the best storylines in the Lancaster-Lebanon League. For the 2nd straight week, Schneider ran 2:13 and finished 2nd to Salerno, who is already the fastest 800m runner in league history.

Those efforts helped Cedar Crest finish 2nd in the Class AAA girls team standings behind JP McCaskey.

Distance success carried the local boys story, where Cedar Crest senior Travis Furmanski swept the Class AAA 1600m and 3200m. Furmanski won the 1600m in 4:15.37 before coming back to take the 3200m in 9:17.92.

In Class AA, Annville-Cleona senior David Moran matched that two-gold effort with wins in the 800m and 1600m. Moran claimed the 800m in 1:55.13, then won the 1600m in 4:20.47 as part of a huge weekend for the Dutchmen.

Annville-Cleona also struck gold in the Class AA boys 4×400 Relay, with Sam Cantor, Benjamin Boyd, Jon Moran, and David Moran running 3:27.65. Sophomore Dominic Wentling added another Dutchmen title in the Shot Put, winning with a throw of 59’0″.

Palmyra had its own District champion, as senior Jaxton Barger won the Class AAA Pole Vault for the 2nd straight years, this time winning it by clearing the bar at 14’0″. The Cougars also made history in the girls 4×100 Relay, where Cala Hipple, Emily Bearinger, Allie Fink, and Maddy Waldron ran 48.84 to place 8th on their way to setting a new school record.

Class AAA Recap

Cedar Crest powered the local Class AAA girls effort, with Kaddel Howard and Eliana Schneider combining for 4 District 3 gold medals.

Howard continued her historic season by winning the 400m in 51.48, the fastest girls 400m time in Pennsylvania history. She also took the 200m title in 23.48 after running a District 3 record 23.42 in prelims.

Schneider added gold in two very different event areas, clearing 5’5″ to win the High Jump and throwing 154’1″ to win the Javelin while setting a District 3 record. On the track, she placed 2nd in the 800m in 2:13.65 behind JP McCaskey’s Vivian Salerno, who won in 2:11.20.

Another major Cedar Crest point swing came from Makenzie Wamsher, who placed 3rd in the 1600m in 4:57.61 to qualify for States. The Falcons also took 2nd in the 4×400 Relay, with Howard, Schneider, Wamsher, and Ryan Stopper running 3:54.17.

Palmyra senior Maddy Waldron gave the Cougars two individual medals, placing 7th in the 100m in 12.32 and 6th in the 200m in 25.56. Her 100m finish also qualified her for States by placing in the top 8 while hitting the Class AAA state qualifying standard.

A school record came from Palmyra’s 4×100 Relay, where Cala Hipple, Emily Bearinger, Allie Fink, and Waldron ran 48.84 to place 8th.

Class AA Recap

Annville-Cleona’s girls built their strongest moments around distance depth and relay strength.

Mackenzie Stellmach led the Dutchmen with a 2nd-place finish in the 3200m in 11:25.62, earning a trip to States. She also placed 4th in the 1600m in 5:25.96.

Behind her, Lucy Stellmach added two more medals with a 5th-place finish in the 3200m in 12:05.27 and an 8th-place finish in the 1600m in 5:40.23.

The Dutchmen also qualified for States in the 4×800 Relay, where Leah Tshudy, Paige Stoltz, Lucy Stellmach, and Mackenzie Stellmach placed 2nd in 10:01.30.

In the field events, Madison Long medaled twice, taking 5th in the Long Jump at 16’5″ and 7th in the Triple Jump at 33’4.75″. Anabella Pulaski added a 6th-place finish in the Javelin at 102’7″, while Caitlin Shay placed 8th in the Pole Vault at 8’6″.

Class AAA Recap

Cedar Crest senior Travis Furmanski set the tone for the local Class AAA boys performances with a distance sweep.

The reigning PIAA Cross Country champion won the 1600m in 4:15.37 and came back to win the 3200m in 9:17.92, giving Cedar Crest two more District titles.

Sprint points came from Landen Weaber, who medaled in both short sprints. Weaber placed 4th in the 100m in 10.79 and 6th in the 200m in 22.82.

The Falcons also found success in the relays. Isaiah Zimmerman, Nolan Lingle, Cameron Tirado, and Weaber ran 42.27 to place 3rd in the 4×100 Relay, while Hayden Snavely, Bryce Wampler, Wyatt Wolfe, and Zachary Margut placed 4th in the 4×800 Relay in 7:56.08.

Palmyra senior Jaxton Barger added another Lebanon County gold in the Pole Vault, winning the Class AAA title at 14’0″. The victory sent Barger back to States as a District champion.

Just outside the medals, Northern Lebanon’s Luke Hentz placed 9th in the 800m in 1:57.52, while Lebanon’s Thadeous Gilbert finished 13th in 1:58.80.

Class AA Recap

Annville-Cleona’s boys produced one of the strongest local team performances of the weekend.

David Moran led the way with two individual titles, winning the 800m in 1:55.13 and the 1600m in 4:20.47.

The Dutchmen showed their distance depth in the 1600m, where Oliver Funck placed 3rd in 4:21.24 and Benjamin Boyd finished 5th in 4:23.02. In the 3200m, Funck placed 2nd in 9:28.91 to qualify for States, while Boyd took 4th in 9:39.91.

Annville-Cleona closed the meet with another championship in the 4×400 Relay. Sam Cantor, Boyd, Jon Moran, and David Moran ran 3:27.65 to win gold.

The throws gave the Dutchmen another major boost, as Dominic Wentling won the Shot Put at 59’0″ and placed 2nd in the Discus at 159’9″, qualifying for States in both events.

Additional medals came from Jon Moran, who placed 4th in the 200m in 23.35, and Ben Allwein, who finished 7th in the Triple Jump at 41’0.25″.
