Palmyra Opens Scriniere Track with Sweep as Girls Claim Keystone Division Title
On a warm, sunny Monday afternoon, with a steady breeze helping keep the low-70-degree temperatures feeling comfortable, Palmyra hosted Susquehanna Township for a Mid-Penn Keystone Division dual meet that carried extra meaning for the Cougars.
The meet marked the opening of Scriniere Track at Buck Swank Stadium, named in honor of longtime Palmyra coach Carl Scriniere, who served as the Cougars’ head coach from 1959-1992 and now continues to serve as a volunteer assistant. With more than 65 years spent coaching the next generation of Palmyra athletes, Scriniere’s name is now permanently tied to the program’s home track.
The Cougars made the day even more memorable with a sweep. Palmyra’s girls defeated Susquehanna Township 140.67-9.33, clinching a share of the Mid Penn Keystone Division Championship. The title is the second straight for the Cougars, who will share this year’s championship with Hershey after both teams finished division action with one loss. Palmyra’s boys also closed their dual meet season strong, defeating Susquehanna Township 109-41.
Girls Recap: Palmyra 140.67, Susquehanna Township 9.33
Maddy Waldron helped lead the sprint group with a win in the 100m, while Emily Bearinger followed by winning the 200m and taking 2nd in the 100m. Ella Stuart added another track victory in the 400m, and Palmyra’s distance group controlled the longer races behind wins from Amber McCurdy in the 800m and 1600m and Olivia Yorty in the 3200m.
The Cougars also swept the hurdle races, with Helena Baker winning the 100m Hurdles and Izzy Weber taking the 300m Hurdles. Palmyra’s depth showed throughout the meet, especially in the distance and hurdle events, where the Cougars stacked multiple athletes near the front.
One of the day’s highlights came in the 4x100m Relay, where Palmyra won in 49.86 to set a new Buck Swank Stadium record. The Cougars also won the 4x400m and 4x800m relays.
