Cedar Crest Breaks Through Late, Snaps Skid Against Hempfield

Cedar Crest entered Monday’s home game against Hempfield looking to change its luck after dropping a pair of tight contests to Lampeter-Strasburg and Penn Manor despite playing well. This time, the Falcons found the timely hit they needed, scoring late to knock off the Black Knights 5-2.

Hempfield struck first in the top of the 1st when Camden Hulock singled home a run, but Cedar Crest answered right away in the bottom half. Skyler Sherman grounded into a fielder’s choice that brought home the tying run and made it 1-1.

The Falcons moved in front in the 3rd when Lucas Schreier doubled in a run to give Cedar Crest a 2-1 edge. Hempfield answered again in the 4th, tying the game at 2-2 on Landon Charles’ RBI single to center field.

That deadlock held until the 6th, when Cedar Crest finally broke through. Mason Copenhaver came up with the biggest hit of the afternoon, singling home 2 runs to put the Falcons back in front. A sacrifice fly from Chase Norris followed, extending the lead to 5-2.

Davin Kolter started on the mound for Cedar Crest and worked 4 innings, allowing 2 hits and 2 runs while striking out 6. Mason Cevette took over in relief and shut the door, tossing 3 hitless innings with 3 strikeouts to earn the win.

Cedar Crest finished with 5 hits in the victory. Carson DiBiaso led the way by going 2-for-3, while Copenhaver drove in a team-high 2 runs. Schreier added a double and an RBI, and Isaac Kreider chipped in a hit and scored a run.

Hempfield managed 2 hits, one each from Hulock and Charles, and both players drove in a run. The Black Knights also showed patience at the plate, drawing 7 walks. Jonathan O’Maille and Logan Dougherty each worked 2 free passes.

Cedar Crest is now 4-3 and will host Ephrata on Wednesday.
