The best of Lebanon County girls tennis gathered Saturday at Annville-Cleona for the annual County Championship, and by the end of the day there was little doubt about which program stood atop the local scene.
Palmyra entered as the favorite for the team crown, and the Cougars more than lived up to the billing, sweeping all four championship brackets to capture the overall title.
The Cougars were led by senior Mia Fair, who capped her stellar day with the #1 Singles Championship. Fair defeated Annville-Cleona’s Nia Hafey in the finals, after grinding through a hard-fought semifinal battle with Northern Lebanon’s Elsie Shuey. Though Hafey settled for runner-up, she reached a milestone earlier in the week by collecting her 50th career victory.
Palmyra added more hardware when junior Anna Rashid claimed the #2 Singles Championship, beating ELCO’s Delaine Hartman in the final.
Doubles play also belonged to the Cougars. The team of junior Niyanta Patel and sophomore Trini Martinez won the top doubles bracket, defeating Lebanon’s Sally Zheng and Yuna Mercedes.
Meanwhile, sophomores Claire Busher and Alana Frawley completed the Cougar sweep by taking the #2 Doubles Championship with a victory over Cedar Crest’s Kara Cawley and Lexi Ramsey.
By securing first place in each division, Palmyra clinched the team championship. Host Annville-Cleona finished as the runner-up.
