On Friday evening, the Lebanon County Championship Meet returned to Lebanon following a two-year relocation on account of construction. All six of LebCo’s Track & Field teams squared off in one of the most anticipated athlete events of the year. Under cloudy skies and occasional drizzle, local athletes performed incredibly well.

When all was done, three new records were set in the girls’ competition. Cedar Crest’s Kaddel Howard, the two-time defending PIAA Outdoor Champion in the 400m, ran her marquee event in 54.95 to break her own record of 55.91 that she had set in 2023. Teammate Eliana Schneider also broke her own record in the Javelin when she measured a top distance of 149’5”. This performance by Schneider followed her 4th place finish earlier in the day at the Penn Relays, where she threw 146’1” as the top American finisher. ELCO’s Makenna Haas also etched her name in the record book, breaking the Triple Jump record with a top measurement of 38’8.25” to overtake the record set by Lebanon’s Zariyah Whigham just a year ago.

Not to be outdone, the boys also set three new records. Palmyra’s Tyler Burgess now owns the record in the 110m High Hurdles and the 300m IM Hurdles. While last year’s PIAA Champion in both events took down the record owned by Matt Deysher (Cedar Crest ‘11) by running 13.94 in the 110m HH, he improved his own time in the 300m IM (37.27). Burgess also joined Landon Weldon, Travis McDannell, and Jacob Burgess to set a new meet record in the 4x100m (42.01).

Besides just record-setting performances, there were several remarkable performances. For the girls, Cedar Crest junior Eliana Schneider collected four golds, winning the 800m, High Jump, and Javelin, and served as a member of the winning 4x800m team. She was last year’s winner of the 800m & High Jump. Also repeating as a champion was Annville-Cleona’s Kendall Cooper in the 100m & 200m. Cooper also joined Miracle Hershey, Jada Morales, and Sophia Caporaletti to take gold in the 4x100m after the foursome ran at the Penn Relays earlier in the day. ELCO’s Makenna Haas was the winner in both the Long Jump & Triple Jump. Cedar Crest’s Makenzie Wamsher also was a double-winner, taking both the 100m High Hurdles & 300m IM Hurdles for the second straight year.

When all of the point totals were tallied, Cedar Crest repeated as the Girls Team Champions.

On the boys’ side, Palmyra’s Tyler Burgess led the way with monster performances that resulted in the previously mentioned meet records. Burgess also served as a leg on the winning 4x400m relay team. Joining him with four golds, including three individual championships, was his twin brother Jacob Burgess, who repeated his climb to the top of the podium in the 100m, 200m, & Long Jump.

Despite the strong effort by Palmyra, Cedar Crest reclaimed the Boys Team Championship. This was aided by Travis Furmanski’s victories in the 1600m & 3200m, along with a strong performance in the field as Dylan Groff (Javelin), Alex Kissinger (Discus), & Tristan Long (Shot Put) each repeated as champions.

Among the most exciting events of the night was the Boys’ 800m, which was won by Annville-Cleona’s David Moran. With a time of 1:58.70, Moran edged Lebanon’s Owen Kreider by just .05. Palmyra’s Cohen Claar (1:59.41) and ELCO’s Chad Keller (1:59.90) were also right there, pushing the pace across the finish line. In fact, the first seven finishers clocked times that were sub-2:03.

What the Lebanon County Track & Field Championship proved once again is that not only are our local athletes always prepared to lay it all on the line to push each other to greatness, but they are showing that they are ready for the postseason. Get ready for an exciting May, which will conclude Memorial Day weekend, with several of our local stars vying for medals at the PIAA State Championship.
