Northern Lebanon 38, ELCO 31

In the nightcap of a doubleheader in Myerstown, ELCO hosted Northern Lebanon. This was ELCO’s second game in two nights, but they entered the game poised to win this key matchup against the Vikings. Their first matchup this season ended with a 38-33 Northern Lebanon victory, and their second meeting of the year promised just as much excitement.

Northern Lebanon rushed out to an early 9-2 lead, but it took a pair of Hayley Sheroky free throws at the end of the 1st quarter to give the Vikings the 11-10 lead at the end of the period. This was the result of ELCO’s quick recovery in the form of an 8-0 The run was led by three-pointers courtesy of Makenna Seifert and Maddie Stout. Sheroky had 5 points in the quarter to pace the Vikings. In the 2nd quarter, Northern Lebanon distributed the ball more evenly as five players scored to give them a 21-16 lead at the half.

Out of the break, both teams opted for defense, as they split 10 points in the 3rd quarter. With the game on the line, both teams opened up in the 4th quarter. Despite a furious comeback attempt by the Raiders, the Vikings turned to Olivia Shutter, who scored 8 points to secure the win.

For the game, Kasey Weimer led Northern Lebanon in the scoring department with 15 points. Shutter finished the game with 12 points. ELCO was led by Kenzie Eckhart, who scored 10 points. The Raiders hit five three-pointers as a team, with Stout connecting on two of them.

Northern Lebanon (16-2) will host Donegal on Tuesday night.

ELCO (8-9) will take to the road on Tuesday to face the mighty Lancaster Catholic Crusaders.

One final note: The Northern Lebanon victory marked the 250th win of Coach Ken Battistelli‘s career. Congrats, Coach!

Cedar Cliff 30, Palmyra 21

Palmyra has had a very good season up until this point. As with any good team, there is a chance for a rough game. The Lady Cougars had one of those games on Friday night when they traveled to place against Cedar Cliff. After winning a 28-18 defensive battle against the Colts on January 3rd, they would find themselves on the other end of a similar contest.

In the 1st half, Cedar Cliff limited Palmyra to scoring on just two free throws by Mya Doster. While Palmyra recovered in the 2nd half to make up some ground, they were not able to make up the 14-point deficit they were facing.

Keely Bowers scored 8 points to lead the Cougars.

Palmyra (13-3) will look to bounce back when they host Hempfield on Monday night.

New Covenant 64, Covenant Christian 54

While basketball is a team sport, there are times when it is necessary to have that one scorer who can go out there to get the buckets needed to win. New Covenant has that player in Qynne Demler. With the Flames entering Friday in District Playoff contention, the freshman was again ready to lead her team. However, Covenant Christian would not make it easy on Demler and her teammates. At the end of the 1st quarter, Covenant led by 5 points. Demler had 7 points in the opening quarter. She would add 9 more points before halftime as New Covenant would take the lead 30-27 going into the break. Demler’s scoring would continue in the 2nd half as the Flames pulled away. Much like the rest of the game, Demler would hit free throws down the stretch to give New Covenant the 10-point victory.

Demler finished the game with 42 points, including going 10-11 from the foul line. Much like the huge scoring games in the NBA this week, Demler became the second LebCo girl to achieve the feat after Lebanon’s Kailah Correa scored 42 against McCaskey on Tuesday.

While the scoring focus is on one player, it is notable to point out that Miracle Hershey is just one player who has continued to perform at a high level. In this game, Hershey ended the game with 9 points, 8 rebounds, and 5 assists.

New Covenant (9-6) will host York Christian on Monday.

For anyone curious, New Covenant does have a 1,000-point scorer in their history. Though it’s early, Demler seems well on her way to joining Kylie Murray in that club.

Lebanon 47, Cedar Crest 44

The Cedars entered round two of the rivalry game, with Cedar Crest seeking a season sweep. If Lebanon could win at home, they would also capture their fourteenth victory in a row and remain in control of Section 1. The Lady Falcons entered the game fresh off of a dominant 41-13 win over Penn Manor, in which their defense held the Comets scoreless in two quarters. This was set up to be a good game from the jump, especially with the memories of the last time the two met at Lebanon High School, which resulted in triple overtime before the Cedars were able to win.

Looking to avoid extra periods tonight, Lebanon jumped out early to a 12-0 lead and ended the 1st quarter with a 15-2 advantage. Kailah Correa, who scored 42 on Tuesday night, again got out to a hot start, scoring 9 points in the opening quarter. In the 2nd quarter, Cedar Crest showed that they would not go away quickly and began chipping away at Lebanon’s lead. Kaila Francis scored 6 points in the 1st half and put Lebanon’s Liliana Harrison in early foul trouble that would limit her for the rest of the game. Meanwhile, Sierra Margut and Laci Lesher previewed some of what would come in the 2nd half when they each hit three-pointers. At halftime, Lebanon still held a comfortable 25-15 lead.

In the 3rd quarter, Cedar Crest began firing from the perimeter, connecting on four three-balls. Lesher added two more from deep as the Falcons cut the Lebanon lead down to a 6-point lead. In the 4th quarter, Cedar Crest went inside to Francis, who led the comeback attempt with 8 more points. Lebanon was able to convert from the foul line to end Cedar Crest’s hopes of a stunning victory. The Cedars remained too consistent as a team for Crest to catch up after falling behind early.

Correa led all scorers with 27 points as she crossed the 1,400-point milestone for her career. Olive Brandt scored 9 points for the Cedars, going 7-8 from the line. Cedar Crest was led with 15 points from Francis. Lesher ended the game with 9 points, hitting three of Crest’s seven three-pointers.

Lebanon (16-2) will be in action again on Tuesday when they host a non-league game against Cocalico.

Cedar Crest (12-8) will have a week off, with their next game being Thursday away at Manheim Township.

Annville-Cleona 56, Lancaster Country Day 31

This matchup offered the vibes of a big-time rivalry game in which the Sanchez brothers were coaching against each other, and cousins were in action. Annville won by a large margin in their first meeting on January 5th, 54-18. The Dutchmen were seeking a similar outcome as they made a run at making Districts after having won their last three games.

Annville got out to an early 8-point lead, limiting Country Day to just 2 points in the opening quarter. In the 2nd quarter, the Dutchmen continued to pull away, holding a 25-7 at the break. Ava Hoover and Kendall Cooper both had 7 points at halftime. In the 3rd quarter, the offensive burst from Annville continued. Going into the 4th quarter, the Dutchmen were up 42-18, and the decision was made to give minutes to several younger players. As the clock expired, Annville claimed their fourth straight victory.

Cooper led Annville with 15 points, 8 of which came in the 3rd quarter. In total, twelve different Dutchmen were able to score in the game.

Annville-Cleona (10-7) will be hunting for their fifth straight win on Monday when they host Susquenita.

Columbia 57, ELCO 22

When playing against Columbia, the defending champions of the Lancaster Lebanon League, opposing teams usually have to play a flawless game to have a chance at victory. The Tide are led by seniors Brie and Brooke Droege, twins that execute at will on the offensive end. On Thursday night in Myerstown, the sisters combined for 41 points, while Columbia’s team defense limited ELCO throughout the game. The result was a Columbia victory.

Makenna Seifert led the Raiders with 6 points.

ELCO (8-8) will look to reset when they host Northern Lebanon on Friday night.

Tuesday, January 23

Annville-Cleona 57, Lancaster Mennonite 37

After being on the right side of a lopsided game against Linden Hall on Monday, the Dutchmen were back in action at home against Lancaster Mennonite. Currently fighting to regain a favorable position in the District Playoff hunt, every game will matter from here on out. On a two-game win streak, Annville was looking to make it three-in-a-row.

The Dutchmen raced out to a 9-point lead by the end of the 1st quarter. They then extended the lead to 27-12 by the time halftime rolled around. Annville was powered by 12 points from Kendall Cooper. In the 3rd quarter, Cooper and Ava Hoover each scored 6 points, as the Dutchmen would hold a 20-point advantage heading into the final frame. As a result of the large lead, Coach Sanchez could give playing time to many of his younger players, including Ava Hoover’s freshman twin sisters, Nora and Dana, who both scored.

Cooper scored 10 in the 2nd half to finish the game with 22 points.

Annville-Cleona (9-7) will play again on Thursday when they travel for a matchup against Lancaster Country Day. In the coaching matchup between the Sanchez brothers, the Dutchmen will be looking for their fourth straight victory.

Palmyra 50, Milton Hershey 44

Seeking their thirteenth win of the season, Palmyra hosted Milton Hershey on Tuesday night. Palmyra grabbed an early lead and led by 5 points at the end of the 1st quarter. In the 2nd quarter, the Spartans drew one point closer, and by halftime, the Lady Cougars were up 25 -21. At the break, Emma Sibbach had 7 points, while Addi Salus and Mackenzie Margut each scored 6. The 3rd quarter was lopsided in favor of Milton Hershey as they outscored their hosts by 13 to take a 41-32 lead going into the final period. In the 4th, Palmyra showed off their dominant defense and held Milton Hershey to just a field goal and a free throw. On the other hand, the Cougars scored 18 points, with Salus scoring 8 and Keely Bowers going 4-4 from the free throw line as she scored 7 in the quarter.  Palmyra made up the deficit and then some, earning another hard-fought victory. All five starters stepped up for the win, including Mya Doster who again provided key rebounding, along with stellar defense.

Salus finished the game with 20 points to lead the winning effort. Bowers hit two three-pointers, adding 12 points to Palmyra’s total.

Palmyra (13-2) will travel to play Cedar Cliff on Friday night.

Northern Lebanon 56, Hamburg 22

Northern Lebanon was looking for win #15 when they hosted Hamburg on Tuesday night. The Vikings didn’t waste any time building a big lead, as they were up 21-6 at the end of the 1st quarter. The Hawks responded in the 2nd quarter with 11 points while holding Northern Lebanon in check. At halftime, the home team was up 28-17, with Olivia Shutter leading the offensive effort with 9 points. In the 2nd half, the Viking defense took over the game, limiting Hamburg to just 5 points in the final two quarters. Meanwhile, Shutter went off in the 3rd quarter, hitting three three-pointers on her way to scoring 13. The Vikings ended up coasting to the 24-point victory.

Shutter finished the game with 22 points, which included three three-pointers and a 3-3 performance from the foul line. Kasey Weimer scored 11, and Hayley Sheroky had 10, which also made it into double-digits.

Northern Lebanon (15-2) will now prepare for a key Section 3 showdown on Friday night when they travel to play ELCO.

Lebanon 62, McCaskey 46

Coming into Tuesday, the Cedars were winners of a dozen straight games, including a massive victory over Manheim Township on Saturday. They jumped out early at home against McCaskey. Behind 11 points from Kailah Correa, Lebanon led 21-5 after the 1st quarter. The 2nd quarter was played much closer, as McCaskey started hitting shots. Correa had 18 points at halftime, and her Cedars were up 36-18. In the 2nd half, Correa completely took over, scoring 9 in the 3rd and 15 in the 4th. While McCaskey outpaced Lebanon in the 4th quarter, it was not nearly enough.

Correa finished the game with 42 points, which included five three-pointers from the junior.

Lebanon (15-2) is now set to host Cedar Crest on Thursday evening.

ELCO 56, Donegal 23

With Thursday’s win, ELCO broke their five-game losing streak. They were looking to start a winning streak when they hosted Donegal on Tuesday night. The 1st quarter was played very closely. However, by halftime, the Raiders held a 25-13 lead. Sara Miller and Maddie Stout each had 8 points in the 1st half to lead the way. The ELCO defense continued to limit Donegal throughout the rest of the game to give the Raiders the victory. They were aided by the eight three-pointers they hit on the offensive end of the floor, including four by Stout.

Stout led the team with 16 points. Miller ended the game with 14. Makenna Seifert joined them in double-figures, scoring 10.

ELCO (8-7) will have the arduous task of hosting Columbia on Thursday night.

Monday, January 22

New Covenant 48, West Shore Christian 40

After earning a hard-fought victory over Our Lady of the Cross on Friday, January 12th, last week’s inclement weather kept the Flames out of action. They set out on Monday to complete the season sweep of West Shore, which would improve their postseason chances. The Flames came out hot and held a 7-point lead at the end of the 1st quarter. A solid 2nd quarter by West Shore put New Covenant down by four at the half. Freshman Qynne Demler had 14 points in the 1st half for the Flames. She would add 9 more in the 3rd quarter, which, combined with an increase in defensive action, allowed New Covenant to jump back into the lead. In the 4th quarter, Demler again led the offense and went 7-8 from the free throw line to put the game away.

Demler totaled 35 points in the game, hitting two three-pointers and going 11-12 from the charity stripe. Five other Flames scored at least one field goal.

New Covenant (7-4) play again at home on Tuesday when Mount Calvary visits.

Hempfield 45, Cedar Crest 40

Cedar Crest entered Monday night looking to start the second half of their Section 1 schedule on a positive note. They hosted Hempfield, a team they lost to by a score of 50-43 in mid-December. This game would once again be a tightly played contest. In the 1st quarter, the Black Knights were able to build a slight lead. The Falcons responded with a solid 2nd quarter, giving them a 24-21 lead at halftime. In the 1st half, a balanced scoring attack was led by Lizzie Lowe with 6 points. Three others had 5 points in the half.
In the 3rd quarter, Hempfield flipped the script as they responded to take a 3-point lead. In the 4th, the Falcons did not succeed as they tried to overtake the Black Knights, despite 8 points in the 2nd half by Kaila Francis.

Lowe finished with 11 points to lead the Cedar Crest scoring. Francis completed the game with 10 points.

Cedar Crest (11-7) will have another opportunity for victory when they host Penn Manor on Tuesday.
