Kriner, Gnall Combine on One-Hit Shutout as Palmyra Edges Donegal
On Monday, Palmyra defeated Keystone rival Lower Dauphin and took over the top spot in the District 3 5A rankings. On Friday, the Cougars returned home for a non-league matchup against Donegal, looking to keep their momentum going and move to 16-1 on the season.
They did exactly that, but it took a pitchers’ duel to get there.
Palmyra defeated Donegal 1-0 on Friday, as Logan Kriner and Chuck Gnall combined on a one-hit shutout to help the Cougars survive a low-scoring battle.
The lone run of the game came in the bottom of the 2nd, when Joey White stole home to put Palmyra in front. From there, the Cougars leaned on their pitching and defense to make the early lead hold up.
Kriner earned the win on the mound, allowing just one hit over 5.2 scoreless innings while striking out 13 and walking two. Gnall handled the final 1.1 innings in relief, allowing no hits while striking out one and walking one. He finished the game by getting Tristan Albert to ground out, sealing the shutout.
Donegal also received a strong performance on the mound from Tommy Hairhoger, who went six innings and allowed just one run on five hits while striking out nine and walking three. Donegal also played clean defense, committing no errors and turning two double plays to keep the game within reach.
At the plate, Max Woodley helped show the depth of Palmyra’s lineup, going 2-for-2 from the No. 9 spot. Matthew Eldridge, Nolan Bown, and White each added a hit for the Cougars.
For Donegal, Andrew Fabian had the team’s lone hit, going 1-for-2.
Palmyra (16-1) now has three regular season games remaining, beginning Tuesday at home against Gettysburg.
