Lebanon Football Season Outlook
In sports, you can only have a successful program if you start each day with a clean slate. Indeed, the Lebanon Cedars have not won a contest since 2020, but that does not matter to the members of the 2024 squad. They are focused on changing the culture, one day at a time.
Under first-year Head Coach Tyler Pritchett, Lebanon Football is rededicating itself to focusing on the big picture of improvement, which will not only make them more successful on the field but also long-term as the young men on the team enter into the real world. For Coach Pritchett, that is the ultimate goal.
A native of Alabama, Pritchett moved to Lebanon last Spring to take over the football program. He describes his role as more of a mentor than a coach, ultimately viewing the sport as a way to mold his players into becoming better people. If this does not happen, Pritchett sees this as his personal failure versus the failure of his players.
Each day, the team is reminded of an acronym that defines what it means to be a CEDAR: “C stands for Confident, Eager, Discipline, Ambitious, Strong.” In addition, the Lebanon School District has adopted the slogan “Unbreakable”, which accompanies the football team’s approach to avoid getting rattled by mistakes, instead responding with a greater tenacity to overcome the challenge.
Despite their record in past years, the Cedars have had talent on their roster and have consistently sent players to play collegiately. This year is no different. The most dynamic playmaker on the roster is Malachi Briddell, a junior wide receiver who finished last season with 29 receptions that went for 254 yards and three touchdowns despite the Cedars playing with a situation that can be described as “quarterback by committee.” Against a talented Warwick defense, Briddell also returned one kick for a touchdown. After the season, Briddell was voted as the LebCo Rising Star.
While several other strong players will be making plays for the Cedars aided by a more stable situation with senior Brandyn Castro at quarterback, it is more important to focus on the overall improvement that will make them more competitive this season. This does not mean that Lebanon is suddenly gunning for a State Championship, but instead, the program is focused on winning each day and learning from mistakes. Prichett’s philosophy will undoubtedly lead to improvement, though the extent of those gains may not be immediately measured in wins and losses.
Coach Pritchett told LebCoSports.com, “Winning games will come and is the expectation, but you have to do right by the kids. Everything else will work out.”
Lebanon will have its first test under their new leader on Friday night when they travel to Palmyra for an inter-county clash that could set the tone for many seasons to come.
